Found 2 rentals

Postby ShanePickle on Tue May 01, 2007 1:01 pm

Okay so I found 2 monthly rental properties on the web in Pucon. They are about $100 US a month different in price. The more expensive one is furnished. So lets say I was going to stay in a rental for 1 year, would you buy furniture and pay the lesser rent or the other way around? The ultimate answer is related to the cost of furniture. We are talking a 2 bed home.

Thanks,

Shane

By the way, are there garage sales in Chile?

furniture

Postby el puelche on Tue May 01, 2007 6:14 pm

no garage sales in CHile...I would take the furnished place and use the extra time to search out furniture that you like so that in a year when you have your own place you will buy for the first time the right way and not hve to sell a bunch of furniture that you don't like....or have to move it to the new place.....

El Puelche blows words of wisdom your way.
Second hand furniture etc is almost as costly as new. There are a couple of sheds selling used goods and my god, you'll see stuff for sale that you would have thrown out 20 years ago. Saw a pair of straight skis recently for USD 400. And a typewriter .... You definitely don't want to rush needing to buy furniture.
Having said that, you also don't need to tie into renting before you get here. I know you're the "have it all sorted before you go" type, but those advertised on web are like 5% of what there is and you'll get uber-gringo prices that way. Unless money is no object, better to book something else for a week or two and then mosey around when you get here. It's not high season so there's no chance you'll miss out (I read recently that out of summer, occupancy is like 15%) Or if you MUST have something sorted before you arrive, ask these guys if you can have the furnished place for a month. You're likely to find much better deals on the ground... everyone knows someone renting a place at the moment!

I guess I'm stuck in the way things happen here in the US. I have this worrry of being stuck in a hotel for a month until I can find a rental to get into. Mucho dinero down the drain. But it appears that it doesn't take that long to find a rental and get into it.

I'm with them

Postby admin on Wed May 02, 2007 10:13 am

I'm with these guys. Pucon is so over built now, that even in the summer high season there are people walking the streets begging gringos to rent their crappy cabins. And they are crappy. Go, and check on the place. They might be fine during the summer, but the wind and rain will go right through them in the winter. Don't hand over one peso until you see the place.

Also, chances are if it is on the internet, it is someone from Santiago renting their summer home. You can do better renting from people that are acutely from Pucon. My recommendation is to find a nice old lady to rent from with empty nest syndrome. The level of service and care will blow away most 5 star hotels in the World.

As for furniture. Pucon and Villarrica is a furniture production area. Lots of cheap crappy pine furniture. So, I would say book one week in a furnished place. One month in a semi furnished place, and after that you will be able to figure everything else out on your own.

With the money you save, you can buy everything new when you get here.

One word of warning however. Unfurnished in Chile, means nothing. That means, no stove, fridge, or even light fixtures. That said, even if they provided them, they likely would not amount to much more than a couple of hundred dollars. They would be the cheapest of the cheap. So, furnished really is not worth the money beyond a few days of emergency.

prices

This might help. For a furnished basic cabin in the Pucon area expect to pay about 75,000 to 80,000 pesos a month or less in the off season. The longer you stay, the more you can negotiate down.

gringo tax

Postby admin on Thu May 03, 2007 12:10 am

You might add a gringo tax to that and double that estimate for planning purposes, but we typically rent cabins the south for around 80,000 -100,000 a month (1-2 bedrooms furnished). We rented about a year and half ago a cabin in central Pucon for 2 months, fully furnished, for 80,000 pesos a month in the off season. Below is the contact info. It has a great view of the exploding volcano. Tell her Charles and Zandra from allsouthernchile.com sent you.

Now be aware that this place is very very basic, and kind of cold in the winter, but the lady that runs the place is very nice. Might be good for getting you going, until you have a chance to shop around. At the very least it gives you an idea of where prices start; so, don't buy in to the wild internet pricing by owners from Santiago who think their summer home they have is in Beverly Hills and worth $400 US a day in the off season.

Satisfied Customer

Postby Vicki and Greg Lansen on Fri May 25, 2007 5:07 pm

I have to tell you that you can pretty much rely on the advice given on this forum as on point. My husband and I used it last year to plan our first trip to Chile as complete novices (read:idiots) and it turned out to be a fabulous time. We used it again this year, and are just winding down an almost three-month visit. From where to stay, to getting around, to Chilean Spanish messages on this posts, it's all been great advice. People who have been here, done that, live here and love it giving their most honest and credible opinions. Good job all.
