Gold and silver

Postby Caribbean Lane » Tue Feb 07, 2012 4:12 pm

We've been researching a move to Chile and have a pretty good idea of what we'll need to take care of with the initial move. However, I have one question that I haven't found an answer for. We want to bring with us some physical gold and silver that we own. Obviously, allowing TSA anywhere near it is taking a huge risk. If they can put iPads in their pants, they should have no problem pilfering coins. I've thought of packing it in our boxes of clothing and household items but I don't know if that is safe, either.

Can anyone suggest a safe strategy for doing this that I haven't thought of?

is that a fact? no dealers in Chile trading G and S? Usually the same guys who change currencies. I know that Canadian Scotia Bank (present in Chile) deals G and S bullions (in Canada). It may be worth doublechecking.

You can thank the Sovereign Man scammers who promote both PMs and Chile.

Who's the Sovereign Man? My husband has been collecting coins since he was a teenager. All I'm interested in knowing is a secure way of transporting them. I've already checked into the legalities.

I think most people Fedex. I don't know of any incidents where things went wrong, but I know nothing about the cross-boarder clearing issues.

I tried to sell some silver coins in Chile one time, it was hilarious, the blank looks..... might as well have been Moon rocks. I keep telling myself that somewhere in Chile there is a buy/sell market for AU & Ag, coins in particular. I love Chile, always have since the day I stepped off the plane, but as mentioned many, many times by Px and others, in Chile you'll need to lower your expectations. The only thing I can think of, (and thought of at the time I was in country) was that I needed to network a bit to find the right people engaging in it, possibly in the Jewish community. Hope that helps.

Pretty much my results also. Admittedly, I didn't do a proper search; but there has to be a coin shop somewhere? Or a guy(s) who does business on the side in PM's & coins.

And how do you think Kitco ships? I don't know of any incidents with fedex, do you? Customs is another matter.
'something like fedex'. Fedex is in a class of it's own. What do you use? I've been shipping stuff around the planet for years, valuables, hardware, regular junk, and so on. Never had a problem with Fedex. Mail? Different story, you take your chances.

Not saying anything is wrong with fedex....

Im saying DONT FED EX GOLD TO CHILE WITHOUT RESEARCHING AND BEING FAMILIAR WITH CHILEAN IMPORT PROCEDURES!!!!!!!

ANYONE READING THIS, THIS IS MY WARNING; DONT FED EX GOLD TO CHILE UNLESS YOU PREPARED TO DEAL WITH THE PAPERWORK AND TAXES!!!!

as admin says many of times, someone puts something simple like "fed ex gold to chile" on the forum, takes one person to think its that simple and ends up in a sorry sob story involving specialist to sort the mess out and costing the person lots of money!
