That is true. There are places where there are attempts to eradicate lupines. But around here they grow like weeds. I have to trim them back so I can get into my house !

.... old estancias. This one in southern Tierra del Fuego. I have been by here more than half a dozen times but I always stop to admire these buildings.

Intentionally or unwittingly, PX has nailed it...."as if mass and gravity were somehow different here". As well as "time and space". Places which steal time, or expand it exponentially. Where the wind tears at the techo and sanity. Where a warm day or fire eats away your memory. Where the dry heat and sands lay out all your life and only to wrap it in the dome star-fire sky. Other galaxies. Cracks of black split the night sky and you find your toes have frozen stiff. The land of conflicting laws of nature; giant conflicting nature to confound and exasperate humans.

Fjords. Wood tugs with wood-burning stoves. Blue glaciers. Lupines. Rodeos.

I saw a moonrise over Tres Monjas once from my place. We had pulled an old travel foam mattress and blankets out on the deck and to watch it come. I almost peed myself waiting for it and not wanting to move. In fact, I may have. Next day there were vegetables to dry and meat to smoke. And there was bread to make and linens to hang out to air. The harshness of the volcanic ash, the high price of filling a gas tank, the frozen water lines, the blisters, the broken bones. Those all faded. But that moonrise never left me.

Who said “If a man will begin with certainties, he will end in doubts…but if he will be content to begin with doubts, he will end in certainties”?

Mass, gravity, time and space ARE different in Chile.

patagonian epistemology...
the logos~pathos~ethos...
can these ever be known a priori?
no - only discovered a posteriori?

btw v~g... can we tweak our collective memories?
do you remember where we once met?
such a nice spot to share some epistemology (and wine)!

Oh, physics, save me from metaphysics.

- (attributed to Sir Isaac Newton)

The wind (the physical wind) is essentially the same in Chile, and takes away the occasional roof. The metaphysical wind is pretty much anything you want it to be, and seems to be fanned by a great deal of alcohol, but it usually leaves the roofs alone.

I like... the way there is no black gas pipe imported to Chile for underground runs. So, the SEC (Superintendencia de Electricidad y Combustibles) and gas utility make you take regular galvanised pipe, paint it with noncorrosive paint that might or might not stick to the galvanised surface, wait a day for it to dry, and then wrap the pipe in strips of tar-paper (fieltro) and tape. By the time you are done, a tira of such pipe costs you four times what it does in Canada.

Of course I like that about Chile. Oh, boy howdy.

He will end in grave, regardless.

I like the modern means of transport in the patagonia, particularly the staff autos for CONAF which reflect the modernity and stature of the institution. Shown here at their inauguration recently along Lago Sarmiento, southeast of the park. The towers are visible in the distance.
