I am sure they can figure out everything they need to with my RUT, since you have to show your cédula. I did have to travel with both (I got the old one back) since my Bolivian visa was in the old passport. The only thing I had to worry about was that I had reserved the plane tickets under the old passport so I had to inform the airline of the new number and e-mail them a scan of the new passport.

Thanks for this useful information! I will be traveling to the US, on March 1st, and my plane tickets were reserved under my old passport number. I will send an e-mail to AA informing them of my new passport number but I'm leary about sending them a scan of my new passport. Are you sure this is a requirement?

This was with LAN, and they told me it was a requirement to make the change. In the end, you have to show it at the airport, and they scan the barcode there, so I don't see much difference.

Thanks for this input! Probably not much difference but, out of curiosity, I'll call AA and inquire about their specific requirements. I do realise that I will have to show AA my new passport at the airport.

I called the American Airlines reservation desk (1-800 number) a few minutes ago and informed them that I had a new passport but that my flight reservation was booked under my old passport. The Service Rep., that I spoke with, said that AA had no requirement that they be notified of a new passport number prior to checking-in at the departure airport on the day of the flight. However, just to be on the safe side, I updated my AA profile to reflect my new passport number. Hmm!

Thanks guys.

I think the old passport is more important when you left Chile with old passport and re-entry with the new one.

I take a look on my exit/entry paper (the one they gave us before leaving the country) ... it has my old passport no. written in this paper.
Then, having the old passport seems quite important this case because you will enter now with the new passport number and entry paper with old number specified. I'll bring both passports and hopefully, then don't ask too much.

btw, once I've already inside Chile. Do I have to register a new passport number? at the civil registration?
Is there any requirement to update the new passport number (for permanent residence visa)? or just leave it like that?

The passport number change is really only of a concern inside Chile for situations like when you buy something under one passport number, and then sell it under another. If you have permanent residency your RUT number should be the identification they use. In any case, you have the notary or whatever file a rectification of the contract or whatever has the old number on it. The passport is rarely the only identifying info in Chile.

As for everywhere else in the World, depends. You should be entering and exiting Chile with your Chilean ID anyway.

Many years ago in Budapest (before the EU) there was a rather large group of broke backpackers I hung around with for a few weeks. They were all selling their western EU, Canadian, and US passports on the black market to earn travel money. They got to do it once or twice (making a few thousand US a pop each), then got polite warnings from the embassies that they would not be given another one if they lost the third passport.
