Ideas de regalo para una chilena por favor

Postby waves » Sun Jan 15, 2012 2:53 pm

We would like to get a nice gift for our friend who has helped us tremendously with our move to La Serena. We searched in Canada during the Christmas rush and couldn't find anything and now here in Chile I sure wish I had looked harder during Christmas! Our friend is in her late 20's, well educated and travelled. Looking for something in the 50.000 to 100.000 CLP range but willing to go higher.

Any suggestions?

OK, serious ideas.

Depends on the person, as always.

In the past I have found old books in the US and Canada that deal with Chilean history. I once found a set of two books that had been signed by a previous Chilean president which had almost value in North America (nobody there knows where Chile is) but in Chile such items can be very valuable and desirable to the dozen or so people here in Chile who can actually read. Books in Chile, whether old or used, tend to be horribly expensive.

Here is one wild idea/example -- again, no idea what interests your friend may have.

OLIVARES VALDIVIA: FOTOGRAFÍA Y SOCIEDAD EN COPIAPÓ 1919-1948
by Martínez L, Boris y Samuel Salgado T

ISBN 10: 9561604051
ISBN 13: 9789561604056
Publisher: Santiago de Chile, Pehuén Editores/ Historia de la Fotografía en Chile/Centro Nacional del Patrimonio Foto
Date published: 2006.
Available from
Libros Latinos
2141 Mission Street
Suite 301
San Francisco , California 94110

also from that seller: I had mentioned Sewell in another thread:

SEWELL, 1914-1926. JOSÉ GRANESE PHILIPPS
Santiago:: Universidad Finis Terrae et al,. 2005.. Paperback. 100p., photoplates, bibl., wrps, oblong 4to . Striking collection of black-and-white photos detailing the operations, buildings, milieu, workers and families, etc.,

also

GEOGRAFIA POETICA DE CHILE. NORTE GRANDE
Santiago, Dirección de Bibliotecas, Archivos y Museos/Banco del Estado de Chile,. 1991.. Hardcover. 111p., color plates, photos, boards, oblong 4to . With numerous color and period photos and an anthology of explicatory texts by a number of noted Chilean writers. The color photos skillfully illustrate some of the natural wonders of Chile North and the period black-and-white photos are historically relevant

If you wish to spend big money within Chile, this book is available

Excelente Px! Hadn't thought of books but I think she would like some of these. Could I get any of the others in Chile as well (i.e., besides the last one)? Santiago only for all of them or do you think La Serena and other smaller cities might have any of these? I'll be heading into downtown this week so will look around as well.

Chileans value such gifts as, but not limited to, shampoo, socks, underwear, bowls, sandwich machines, and beach towels. Practical is the way to go here unless she is a cuica and then you can get something unpractical like a designer purse or high heel shoes. She might enjoy a gift certificate to a dentist as well...

Considering that Waves is thinking about spending US200 or more on a present I don't think anyone who is well educated and travelled would be very impressed by the 'practical' suggestion made by J1234 - sorry, nothing personal - if she did such a great job in helping a family to settle. Designer bags and shoes start at double that amount and they're very personal (not to mention a gift certificate to a dentist or "lingerie", don't even think about it), accessories that are difficult to buy for someone else. However, a nice leather diary (Filofax has a great assortment of colours) or compendium (if she is a professional or student) could be the way to go, or perhaps a case of her favourite wine - if she likes them - tickets to the opera/concert, wine tour, etc.

Still, Px has probably the most original so far and something that she (and possibly her children) will appreciate for a long time.

Just out of curiosity J1234, just who would be a cuica?

The Stgo antiquarian book store I mentioned has a website.

http://www.libroselcid.cl/

You can also find some interesting antiquarian books on Chile via ebay, both within and outside Chile. Prices within Chile tend from the outrageous to the absurd, while selection ranges from disappointing to disturbing. You can actually do better with books in Argentina, esp the used/antiquarian shops in Bs As.

I have found some old books related to the Chilean nitrate industry and other facets of Chile/Argentina history on ebay, including some valuable first editions.

By the way, for those few in Chilito who appreciate truly good books with enduring value, we normally do not write anything on the books themselves, as is the North American gifting practice, but instead on a little half-sheet or a simple card placed loosely inside the book. However, there are some Chileans who have been besmirched by foreign practices and write little dedications on the books (this is however considered acceptable when the book has no more than sentimental value or is coming from an author/editor or publisher).

Under the coffee discussion we had mentioned the Wonderful/Café del Teatro at Lastarria 90, in the Lastarria district. From time to time (some Saturdays, I think) there may still be sidewalk vendors of old and not so old books around nearby, on José Victorino Lastarria con Merced. Locally called the "feria." Prices tend to be high but you can deal if you know how. So a good hit of caffeine and a book-crawl is a possibility around there.
