hello from lima

Postby Choripan » Fri Jan 06, 2012 3:09 pm

Hello Chile expats!

My name is Frank Andreas Sposito. I'm a writer from California and I have been living in Lima, Peru, for the past year. I was in Buenos Aires for the year before that, and now I'm considering a move to Chile (Santiago?). I look forward to reading your cumulative posts on everything from immigration issues to the rental market to great places to visit. Allchile.net is definitely the wikipedia of the southern cone. Okay, now back to researching the move... Happy new year! Frank

How do you come up with constant witty replies? I burst into laughter when I read that.

To the OP: Welcome and good luck with all your research, tons of things to learn from this site.

It's either the medication or the Kiwi in me. Kiwis are constantly and marvelously funny as the result of stealing other people's material.

Go to Valparaiso, nice city for inspiration. Live on one of the cerros and get inspiration a la Neruda.

Yes, Valparaiso, it is very inspiring. There is a ode on every sidewalk, impatiently awaiting the sweetest crushing kiss of shoe-sole. It reeks of that fetid unbrushed drunken breath that is Chilean kultur. And dog-shit and diesel and woodsmoke. And stale urine. The seafoam mucous of a thousand natural medications lifts its seminal trace upon the recalcitrant winds and seeks the mother of all allergens down your greying concrete channels. Everyone believes himself a Neruda whilst pissing in Valpo's doorways.

I thrust you into the air one Summer day

only to watch you land on the roof -
the rough, black speckled covering that smelt of tar
under the body baking midday sun.
I don't know how you were trapped, unable to fly
back down to me, an error of my wrist.

You remained on top my house until a year passed.
My father used the ladder to save you.
Did you know three seasons went by with you up there?
Your body did. It's once paper white now a faded, yellowed
ghost of your once glorious plastic curves.

And now this new Summer day I see

you were privileged to an extent far greater than I.
Watching you spin through blue skies with jealous
eyes while my feet remained planted in the earth
I wished to feel that whip of wind gliding over
and beneath my body as it does with yours.

But what would become of my body if I landed where you had?

Mea culpa! I guess I'm the lone Irishman who doesn't! :(

Upon reflection, my Kiwi relatives aren't very funny. However, when it comes to witticisms, you and PX are unparalleled. 8)

If Neruda were still with us he would be appalled by your condemnation of Valpo!
