Falklands

Postby bazzasoft » Fri Dec 30, 2011 10:36 pm

I'm not sure exactly which forum this message should go on and hope that if I made a wrong choice the management will correct me.
A few weeks ago we in the UK received news that three countries on the East coast of South America had issued a joint statement that no ships carrying the Falklands flag would be permitted in their ports. Has there been any reaction to this in Chile ?
Barry
P.S. Interestingly, we also learned this week that the UK is still giving aid to Brazil, despite the fact that Brazil is in better financial shape than the UK !!

They can't afford the Falklands, they can't afford the mainland, it looks like another default for them in the New Year.

The Falklands belong to Argentina just as much as Saint Pierre and Miquelon belong to Canada.

Just because the are part of the same continental shelf doesn't mean anything. The inhabitants have the right to self determination and they choose to stay part of the UK. Argentina tried to invade and lost... in my opinion they don't have any claim to the islands.

Being British it winds me up a little to hear so much about the Falkland Islands and hearing of all the support from fellow Latin American countries. I can't remember hearing the same people suggesting that French Guiana should be part of Brazil, Venezuela or some other South American country.

Why does Argentina have such a fascination with the Falklands? Surely it's not about oil.

It’s because besides their plastic surgeon and psychologist they have nothing else to talk about. Oh yeh, I forgot in 1911 (in the last millennia) they where the 5th riches country in the world, now broke of course.

From over here in the UK it's made the middle area of the news, and there is no mention of Chile supporting Argentina, it seems to be the East coast countries. A bit strange there as Chile has always been a friend to the UK.

Interesting point about Brazil being given aid by the British. I didn't know that, but I do know we give billions to India, a country in a similar position to Brazil - booming.

British oil companies are just going to start drilling offshore in the Falklands, billions of barrels of oil waiting to be tapped apparently so there you have Argentinas interest.

Er, down, but not out, and, in my opinion, not the power we were, but still influential - and we will make it back because that is what we do.

The last time Argentina were sabre rattling about the Falklands it was a screen to hide their own political problems, and its a subject that comes up from time to time, and then dies down again. I don't know how strong Argentinas political position is now.

Ah.might have misread that. Who's broke ? Argentina or the UK. If its the latter then re read my last post, down but not out.

I think not, we haven't defaulted on anything yet.

Argentina was the 5th richest country in the world 100 years ago, it’s the Arggies that will never stop bragging about that as they sink into their mismanaged economy.

This time though the IMF has real countries to bail out.

¿Viste che? Los argentinos son italianos que hablan español y se creen ingleses.

Dicen discursos franceses y votan como senegaleses.

Admiran el orden suizo y practican un desorden boliviano.
