Re: English Books

I have three sources for books here in Santiago: I belong to the IAC, which has a library and also sells books which are duplicates or which just don't fit. The Santiago Community Church on Av Holanda has about 4 sales a year where there are tables of books. Both these sources are very cheap for buying second hand books and the library has a good selection. Maybe not recent best sellers, but some of my favourite books have not been best sellers.

My other source requires a library card and an online library system. Mine is USA based because that is where my son set it up for me. Someone has to go in and register personally. We share the ID # and pin. With that I can download audiobooks on my iPod. You can also download books to a kindle if you have one of those. The selection depends on the library system you use but is usually very large and is free.

I sometimes buy books on Amazon and ask my son to bring them for me when he comes, but I don't order them here as I can't afford all the postage etc.

Actually I remembered another source: http://www.archive.org/ I go on there for really old non-fiction books about travelers to South America. Some of them are really fascinating. Example: http://www.archive.org/stream/overandes ... 8/mode/2up

For books in Spanish I usually browse Contrapunto as their prices are pretty good and their selection interesting. One of their shops on Av Providencia has an outlet section.
