The designated postal operator of Chile has advised that as a result of complaints from a coalition of previously unknown indigenous groups and the possibility of snowfall in Lonquimay at some time during the next four years, certain adjustments will be required in the listings of permitted and prohibited items that may be brought into Correos de Chile offices on certain days of the week.

With an effective date of 1 December 2011, the Chilean postal authority has added the following to the existing list of items which may not be mailed on Wednesdays: cardboard boxes, colour photographs of birds, any document containing the word "Phillips," yellow toothbrushes, fabric patches depicting the banner of Latvia, golf-balls that show any evidence whatsoever of a hard left slice, enriched uranium fuel rods for nuclear power stations, small metal springs of the type often found in ballpoint pens, Star Wars memorabilia including unregistered light-sabers, paper labels from tins that may have once contained peas, CDs with any melody sung by Richard Harris, floppy diskettes, Corgi toys, maps of Tasmania, spoons, souvenir key-rings, any clothing item containing Rayon, fishing hooks, adhesive tape, nonapproved plastic navels for stuffed animals, and photocopies of cancelled cheques reflecting values of greater that US$24.68. Correos de Chile regrets any inconvenience.

That is so funny. And unfortunately right to the point.

Even though I should be used to this type of bureaucratic policies with a a minor twist of autocratic elements (like in inconsistent, nontransparent, unreasonable etc), it regularly drives me crazy. It doesn't impact my life, because I don't use Correos de Chile and I'm travelling on a monthly basis to North America or Europe.

And no, I don't buy it that outgoing parcels are scrutinized or have even to go through customs in other countries (at least those claiming to be civilized).

I'm on day 50 w/o smoking and need the last 2 weeks of 7mg Nicoderm patches sent from the US.
I don't think they are available in Chile. Gum yes, patches no.
Anyway, I had my daughter buy the patches, open the box and drop 'em in an envelope (only slightly larger than a regular envelope).
She's sending them via Fedex tomorrow to a La Serena "observatory" address.
Am I breaking the law? Will the patches arrive? This is really, really, really important to me.
Otherwise, I guess I could borrow the OP's non-exportable balls and just go cold turkey, but...

They exist, I had to look into them for a work project once:

From what I remember they weren't cheap, but it might be cheaper then sending them via FedEx.

You might also want to talk to my wife about this. I think she used to get the gum from New Zealand. As far as I know you're entitled to send it but there may be a great deal of bureaucracy involved at this end, possibly involving doctors. Often packages in the normal postal service aren't stopped though. There are some old posts from eeuunikkeiexpat on this kind of thing.

... or you could just go with the last suggestion (good find).
