Dual Citizenship Questions

Postby brian.usa » Wed Dec 14, 2011 6:22 pm

I entered Chile on a tourist visa (90 days) and it will be expiring soon and I won´t be leaving Chile until another year. During the past few weeks I´ve obtained Chilean citizenship and now have a carnet. Do I need to advise the US embassy? What sort of tramite does one need to do that is on a tourist visa but then obtained citizenship during that time?

From what I understand I´m going to have to get a Chilean passport to leave Chile (underr this new law recently passed).

Any advice now that I have dual citizenship? Enter/Leave Chile with the Chilean passport and Enter/Exit the US with my US passport'?

Thanks!

If you entered Chile on a tourist visa less than 90 days ago you more than likely don't have citizenship but rather resediency, unless you have Chilean blood in you.

And with residency you are not elegable for a passport. As long as you have your original passport you entered on and your new Carnet you have nothing to worry about.

I have Chilean citizenship...I was told that I could not leave Chile without a passport because of the recent law.

Admin,

I believe from past posts, if I remember correctly both his parents were born in Chile.

Ok, so you are a chilean citizen therefore just as you stated at the beginning of this thread, you exit and enter Chile with chilean passport and enter with US passport into the land of the " fry"..ooppss sorry..free.

Yes, but I wanted to rhyme and if I write fried, it won't. Not'ng to worry about. I have seen soooooooo many mistakes written here by "true english natives" that my spelling twisted or not looks amazing by comparison  Don't worry....be happy.

OP, to summarize, you entered Chile on a foreign passport, "overstayed" your tourist visa, got Chilean nationality and now have a Chilean cédula, correct?

So yes, you need a Chilean passport now to leave Chile.

I don't think it's a new law, it was a problem I ran into in 2008.
