Not exactly. That would be "external" radiation.


Actually we were told to wash our hands so that we didn't accidentally eat anything contaminated with the DU.

Then you'd be right, and that would be internal. Eating it may not be as dangerous as breathing it though, since I think (not sure though) most of it would just pass through.
