Newbie/Visitor staying in the Valparaíso area

Postby gaygringo1980 » Sat Nov 26, 2011 7:53 pm

Hi there to all fellow-Americans and the other English-speakers on this forum!! I was very excited to find this site and to know there was a way to communicate with others living and/or visiting here in Chile!! I guess I should first introduce myself....

My name is Alan and I'm a 31-year old cajun boy! I am from the New Orleans, Louisiana area. About 3 1/2 years ago....I met this really awesome guy online named Marco (Yes...that's right...we're gay!) who is from here in Chile, and we've been together ever since! I am currently here on my 2nd visit to Chile (November 5th thru January 14th) and am staying with Marco and his family not too far from Valparaíso. I first visited here back in August & September of 2009 and I fell in love with this country!! It is so beautiful here...I have always loved mountains and really large hills!! In southern Louisiana...everything is very flat and below sea level!! lol And the weather has been unbelievable!! Back home is always hot and humid! I laughed at the caption on the news yesterday....a news-story they did in Viña del Mar and the caption said "Temperatura Extrema!!" And others I keep hearing around here say "Hace calor!! Hace calor!!" LOL I'm like...."You have no idea what heat feels like until you've lived in Louisiana for one summer!!" It feels wonderful here compared to back home!!

Anyway...I guess that's enough about me for now. I hope to get to know many others here in the forums and gather more information and learn more about the area! Thanks!

Welcome to the forum Alan! Yep, the weather in New Orleans brings new a whole new meaning to hot and humid. :) Now, if Bourbon Street could be relocated to either Valpo or Vina, life would be perfect. 8)

I have heard that Valparaíso and Viña del Mar during New Year's Eve are about 20 times the size of Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras!! So far...quite a few people have told me that it is the biggest fireworks display and party in all of South America!! I am so looking forward to it!! :D

This coming New Year's Eve will be my third time watching this incredible fireworks display (the parties aren't bad either). The fireworks are set off from off-shore barges all along the bay from Valpo to Con-Con. A spectacular visual enhancement results from the municipalites turning off the electric power just before the fireworks display starts. I have also heard it referred to as the best fireworks display in South America.
