Um, just had a US-sourced item arrive DOA, contacted seller (Amazon) and they credited the full amount of purchase price. Didn't even need to return the item. Not the first time I have had electronic stuff go south and successfully dealt with warranties from the north. One is not necessarily SOL.

I import stuff from china on a regular basis, send a email + photo of the defective goods, full refund, never need to return the goods!

Ouch, this thread is hard to read.
I'm moving to Chile end of next week and I'm a gadget nut buying the latest things every few months cos I just have to have the latest thing.
Looks like I'm gonna have to change my ways.
I always built my own computers, same for family and friends, got most of my stuff from newegg.com.

I used to buy from newegg. After one outrageous DOA and protracted return experience on a high-dollar item I learned what they were made of. So, never again with newegg.

get yourself an account with a shipping box in miami that handles all the customs bs, and will forward on turbus to where ever you live in the country. my average costs is about 25 - 50% over what i pay in the states including tax (depends on weight more than anything). best if you are shipping low weight/size high cost tech items like processors and laptops.

watch out for amazon. Their idea of packing can cost a fortune to forward to chile.

with all my imports the only thing i have had DOA are 2x Solid State Hard Drives, out of 30 i have imported........ hasnt been too bad, but as admin says, my biggest un expected cost, and especially with amazon, is the half empty boxes that arrive!, my gf was horrified when her $30 hair straigner arrived and she had to pay $15000 for freight because of the box they used!

Hey MacGyver, are you mixing Dollars ($30)and Pesos ($15000) there? Or was it $15000USD in freight costs?

hahahaa, yes, its a mix in the costs brain gets stuck between the two!

and yes, its about surviving in chile, you have to adapt.............. how many expats are in chile making good money in IT... not many!, need to make my self that much better than everyone else to justify my positition! or else some chilean will get my job for 800k per month, the systems will fall over in 3 months, and then they will just resort to excel, pens, and paper! the chilean way!

I've found another interesting supplier of computer parts in Santiago that also delivers elsewhere by TurBus:

http://www.ttchile.cl/

Although their selection is a bit erratic overall (eg. only 1 printer?!), they have some quite nice kit that isn't hugely overpriced, eg. a range of decent power supplies and cases (including HTPC models), at maybe 10-30% above US prices. In particular, they seem to be the Chilean distributor for Antec (my last Antec PSU has been rock solid, so I decided to get another). For the specific parts I needed this time they had significantly better options than PCFactory.

My stuff hasn't arrived yet so I'll reserve some judgement, but ordering was pretty easy. In the meantime, I've added them to the wiki list.

Cheers,

James.

By the way, if you want to order memory or SSDs by mail, importing from crucial.com can be a good (if less obvious) option. Their RAM has historically been very reliable, they have delivered to Chile for me in the past for a reasonable cost (last time it wasn't stopped by customs) and you can go back 4 years later and buy the same model of certified-compatible memory to go with the sticks you originally installed. (Hope I'm not jinxing my new build now.)

i bring in a lot of SSDs and ram, as well as a lot of HP gear for 5+ year old servers..... all via miami tho, i want thinks in a week, not 5!
