Think. I will pass on buying an argentian ski resort. I hear they are all covered in chilean volcanic ash.

Mostly just the ones around Villa la Angostura, San Martin, and Bariloche areas. The rest of the areas mostly unaffected (Los Penitentes and Las Leñas in Mendoza; La Hoya in Esquel, the slopes in Ushuaia area and so on). Not that we would touch them with a 10-metre ski pole for investment purposes.

But Juan Manuel Fangio was so good he should count as three all by himself.

Agreed! But they were only two other Argentinians who won F1 races.

F1 race stats

Argentina: 3 drivers for a total of 38 wins (Fangio had 24 wins))
Brazil: 6 drivers for a total of 101 wins
UK: 19 drivers for a total of 218 wins

Extract:
Argentina and Venezuela are two notable exceptions to the still- solid outlook for South America, reflecting domestic-policy weaknesses that are producing distortions and raising the risk of a hard landing. In Argentina, huge fiscal and monetary expansion has raised inflation above 20% and eroded export competitiveness dramatically, raising speculation of the need for a peso devaluation in 2012.

I have to officially report that for our part the normal stready trickle of expats and foreign investors from argentina to chile is rappidly turning in to a flood. I think this colapse is real. When foreign investors are reporting that they had to wait two hours at a gas station just to leave....

We now hear they are restricting dollar purchases, and no one wants pesos.

The dif this time is argentina is going to be caught without chair when the music stops, because the PIGS are sitting in the chairs already. No one is coming to their rescue.

I recall it is ten years to the month when Argentina had the last great meltdown in 2001 ...

Didn't they add a significant amount of gold reserves over the past couple of years? If it actually exists and was truly bought for the benefit of The People, they do have some sort of restart button.

Maybe a Venezuela-Argentina-other country monetary gold conspiracy unfolding?

The long Argie fuel lines have been an artifact of the last 4 years or more. Not directly related.

I was in Argentina during the Dec 2001 meltdown, though it really became insane after I left, in Jan of 2002.

I finally had moment to read up on what is going on over there. Black market rates of 5.0 or more, and the gov is saying the inflation is 9% while economist are saying the real rate is more like 25%. Argentina gov has been closing exchange houses and going after the black market of dollars. Banks are reporting that even legit dollar purchases are being denied or delayed.
