Spam in Chile

Postby zer0nz » Thu Oct 20, 2011 9:07 am

Very simple,

We recieve 7000 spam emails a day to our servers in chile from chilean mailing lists....

Most state in the email that they comply with the law, i send a email asking to remove all emails from our domains, but continue to recieve the spam.....

Can i take legal action???? We have a lawyer on retainer would i be wasting his time by having hm chase this? or am i likely to get some money out of it for the company and start putting a stop to spam?

Im guessing the first step would be sending a letter from the lawyer to the company saying stop spamming us?

Thoughts?

Strange I get very few from chile, or my spam assassin has no problem dealing with them.

A letter might work, but going after each of them would be expensive and the damages would be next to nothing even if you won (forcing a settlement might work).

the number of spam companies are limited in chile, so in theory you could get at least the big ones. Connecting them to a particular spam might be hard.

What needs to happen is someone go after their advertisers in chile. The idea that they might get sued for hiring those companies would dry up the already small market.

The Unsolicited spam from true spam servers i have filtered with spam assassin,

This is from chilean marketing companies with bad practices that have brought or stolen databases from difference sources.... then use real servers to send the email,

I usually send a email saying please remove all address from all these domains from your list! but 5 days later we are still receiving emails from them for another company......

I think im going to get the lawyer to draft up a template with his signature etc on, ill fill in the blanks and send it by registered post each time we receive a email.....

If we are still on the lists, ill try the advertiser directly! then of course we can try something stronger down the line!

Sound like you need to install Spamassasin or something like it on your servers.
Or use Google corporate for your mail, they have very good spam filters.
If you reply to the spam all you do is confirm that you are responding from a "live" email address, and this will get you yet more spam.

If you go after them with a lawyer, they will disappear and reappear under another name, waste of time and money.

Im not trying to target dodogy companies, i have gotten rid of that spam with spamassasin,

Im trying to target chilean email marketing companies with bad practices of stealing or reusing databases.... these are identifiable companies.....

and i cant put the spam filters up any stronger because we get too many false positives and lose alot of email!

the reason we have so many emails in mailing lists is because these domains have been around since day 1 of the internet in chile....... (very old companies).....
Email address have been on websites.....
People signing up for mailing lists with company emails without thinking what might happen with there emails...
then mailing companies reselling or having email lists stolen.....

We have 300 mailboxes on our servers, with 6 different domains....

out of 7000 - 9000 spam a day we are receiving, only about 40 - 100 are getting through......

Looks to me that you are doing pretty good then, like you say tightening the filters will just give you more false positives.
These "marketing" (I hate that word) people know exactly how far they can go.....
I go through my mail headers with one finger on the Delete button.

I doubt they do know how far they can go probably because no one has bothered to take action before.... its more for me to teach them a lesson than to manage the spam! :)

I was so hoping that this would be a thread about where to find Spam in Chile and it's nice to see that Zer0nz didn't disappoint. :) There's really nothing like eating fried spam with rice and eggs in the morning, pure heaven I tell ya, pure heaven!!!
