Art in Chile

Postby Pencil lover » Thu Oct 06, 2011 10:37 am

Hi, my name is Gemma and I am new to this forum. I am visiting Chile (Santiago only this time) in November on a research visit. I am looking for really good quality art stores and distributors and wondered if anyone can help me please? I have never been to Chile before and found a link to this site where there were quite a few people discussing art. I am also interested in knowing about any Art Academies or Universities and the best galleries to go and visit.
If anyone can recommend some good restaurants that would also be fab thank you :D

yea, you are not going to find anything like Santa Fe or similar in Chile. You will have to find the artist yourself, and the individual galleries / stores.

FYI, if your going to attempt to bring/take art out of the country you will need to have it certified by the artist at the local museum. The certification shows that they are the legal creator and you are the legal owner of the art, and that the art is not an original of someones elses work that you are trying to smuggle out of the country.

Hi, thank you so much for the feed back, but it is actually more about the best places to go to buy art products. Also, I am trying to understand how the education market is serviced - is there a big focus on art in the school curriculum and do you have a lot of specialised Art Universities? Are their National art competitions that are run through schools? Is there a specific area in Santiago that is know as a very 'arty' place - bohemian, etc? What is the best gallery to go to? Do the galleries sponsor any exhibitions? so many questions...... :)

.
Art supplies are sold anywhere you can buy spray paint in Chile.

Judging by the saturation of the market --- millions of examples of public art in Stgo alone -- it is sometimes suggested that comparable efforts be made in other areas of education, such as economics, engineering, cooking, fire suppression, building trades, and fundamental civil behaviour 101.

muchas gracias p~x...
even though you~others may not appreciate the artistry involved
thanx for the segue - allowing a bump of our previously ignored street~art thread...

As g~j continue to pedal their asses around the local streets...
We continue to be impressed as to the diversity of color~content we observe.
We always try to remember to carry our camera to record these works...
Or, if in a colectivo, we try to remember where the art was - then return later on our bike.
We doubt anyone else will ever make a comprehensive record of these - it's a one-time-deal!
And we are very happy to share - for posterity :D
...
Is the artistic environment here that unique in Chile... :?:
Is it because we live on the edge of the Atacama desert, that some~few folks need to inject such vibrancy of color into their community?
Everybody we've shared this url with - far-flung-friends around the whirld...
well, they are amazed at what our local artists produce.
g~j await anyone else to share some of their similar images.
That would be nice :D

Besides the spray cans, here are some places for you to look for more traditional art products

http://www.artisan.cl/

they also have a gallery with links to other artists
http://www.artisan.cl/galeria/default.htm
and they can answer your other questions via the posted email at their site

This shop is in Providencia and is fairly well known for brushes and canvasses amongst other supplies

http://www.telasatriles.cl/

Tienda de arte http://www.tiendadearte.cl/ provides means for artists to display and sell their works

Arte Urbano doesn't appear to have a web site but they are another art supply source . Location is Av. Providencia 2528, local 5

ARTE FACTO used to be a distributor of foreign-sourced art supplies but I don't know what has become of them - you can try via info@arte-facto.cl

http://www.pinacotecachile.cl/ is a gallery and possible contact for your questions

The Museo de Artes Visuales has an art education section with a link here http://www.mavi.cl/?cat=24 and they may be able to better answer your questions.

Sorry that I don't have any names (but actually, an internet search should turn up some info), but one form of art that I have found quite nice here is mosaic. Chilean mosaic artists use a special kind of ceramic tile, many of which are hand glazed, and use some nice/unique techniques compared to mosaic art elsewhere. Very beautiful results. There are a number of mosaic artists, ceramic suppliers and teachers in the Santiago area.

Are there any encaustic artists out there in AllChileLand? Does anyone know if or where I can get Damar Resin in Chile. It is an indispensible ingredient for making encaustic wax medium. At a pinch, carnauba wax could be substituted but I have had no luck at sourcing that either. Help, please!

I will look into this and see what I can find---obvious places to pick a brain or two would be Los Dominicos in Santiago and Bella Vista for a start but I would also try art proffesores at the U Catolica as if there was anyone in Chile to know about it, they would---at least a start.

No, the links aren't where to buy directly but in the long tradition of finding what you need in Chile you quickly learn to start off with "Caballero, por favor, una consulta.....?" "Ando buscando...." or the classic "Ubica usted donde....?"

and then the response...."AHHHHHHHhhhhhhhh----tiene que ser donde Pablo----si, donde Pablo...por alli, no ma'po'...." and then a quick point of the lips showing meant to indicate some geographic area outside of the general vicinity of where you are at the moment and off you go.

Hello all, I am new to the forum and so happy to have found you here! I am an artist new to living in Chile and the lakes region and am in the process of setting up my studio. I have seen the extremely helpful links to the art supply stores in Santiago and will visit them for supplies. My current pursuit is for a well made, good sized drafting table and quality easel and studio chair. Any ideas for sources or sightings out there? Thanks very much! Cisne
