OP,
I arrived with a similar intention last February but with a larger budget. I also arrived with the cushion of having a Chilean girlfriend. We simply crashed on her sister´s couch for the first month...rent free. Despite not having to pay rent or utilities, I needed every last peso of the 500,000 clp I brought with me. I needed to eat and print off resumes. It took me nearly two months to find a job (teaching English) and in order to do so I had to march around town, taking whatever form of transportation (expensive) to get to nearly every language institute. Is 175,000 clp the most you could possibly save up? If I were you, I´d save as much as possible and bring at the very least 400,000clp. Work in Canada for a month or so in fast food or whatever and quit. Bring some more money and make your arrival a bit more comfortable :D .
Best of luck

Looks like 175000 is not enough! That's all the pesos the exchange place I went to had. Is the exchange rate better in Chile (from USD to pesos) or in Canada?

The rate will be better in Chile and you can exchange dollars any day of the week even Sunday. You can use an ATM machine and withdraw from your Canadian Bank account which is easier and safer than cash.
