Depends on what sort of craft you are talking about.

For the most part you are allowed to import them, but you might regret that you tried when it was all done.

For instance, we have been dealing with a lot of imports of sale boats recently (40+ feet), and you do have to pay the taxes on them. Otherwise you have to sale out of Chilean waters every 3 months and touch base in another country to renew their papers.

Admin the 90 day issue is not such a big thing, generally sailboats get 3-4 extensions, they don’t want to push someone into Patagonia in the wrong season then need to save them. I have a friend who has now been in Chile 3 of the last 4 years with only 2 3 month visits to Argentina, he is heading north back to Canada this year. One of his years was on the hard in Pt. Montt working on his boat. Here is the link used by sailors worldwide for information on all the countries of the world with official links and notes added by sailors, so often the most recent information is available.

Larger sailboats are taxed with the LUX taxes. For smaller 17-28ft fishing type boats buy in Pt. Montt the fishing and salmon industry has lots of choice, if it’s a hot ski type lake boat they are available but will cost. The problem with sailboats is there really isn’t anywhere to keep them north of Pt. Montt.

The problem is not so much the in and out 3 month issue. It is more than if you are not up to date and you decide to finally import it, lots of bureaucratic red tape will appear in the process to make you wish you had kept it up to date.
