I think someone alluded to this some days ago:

The reason is that, one's ability to actually correct all that has to be corrected around them is limited. As is their lifespan, that could [and should, IMO] be used to do better things.

That's a pretty big philosophical chunk you bit off there my friend - should be it's own thread!

Px, great image! It's easy to get caught up in the forum correction ad infinitum mindset.

As someone who's been looking abroad for a while, had Chile on the short list and recently has focused on it exclusively, I am very appreciative of the forum. If it didn't have valuable information I'd quit coming around. There's simply too much to do and other resources available. But I find the insights, good, bad and ugly, very helpful. I'm very ignorant about living in Chile, so it's all invaluable to me. Thanks for the resource and sharing your experience. Hopefully I'll be better prepared do to your efforts.

Nonetheless, I am pretty sure that a number of posters use the forum purely for their own entertainment, and are not at all serious, yet, they skillfully mask this kind of behavior. I'd not name the names, though.

For the record, I have no mirrors here. Yet, I'd say that forum member "terra nullius" is less than serious one, as it is shown by his usage of the quote by G. I. Gurdjieff. Not serious quote, period.

Whether the incarnation(s) of G and TN approach unity can be disturbed at another time. The matter of the physical versus figurative Mirror has been left to wander in a thicket of metaphor.

Yes and no. They might not need 'guidance', but they (and I) certainly need data provided via this forum in order to make our own judgements. In my opinion, we owe a lot to Charles for making the forum available.

This forum provides far more data than guidance (i.e. advice), but it is good to get both from those who have experienced Chile. It is up to the reader to make their own judgement on the veracity of the writer, their data and their guidance/advice/conclusions.

A principal reason I 'contribute' by working on the wiki is to 'give back' for the valuable knowledge I gain from the forum. I could name the many contributors who provide valuable information and insight, but I would probably be remiss by forgetting a few.

And of what use would be the "figurative mirror", if such mirror existed?.. Yours is not a serious post, so I think. For entertainment only.

The conduct of meaningful introspection, through the use of the metaphorical Mirror, may indeed be simply entertainment for some.

I think for some of the critics that feel the forum is not for serious information, are missing one the very serious functions of the forum. Specifically reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness amongst members in their chile venture, and perhaps more.

That includes everyone from the wife of some executive in santiago, to the lone retired hippy in the patagonia, to the person sitting in the states or Europe getting ready to step off the cliff in to their chilean adventure. The fact that people that have been living in chile for years, sometimes decades, and would otherwise be considered to "have chile licked" or at least not need day to day hand holding, is proof that forum must be providing something more than a simple "wikipedia of chile" function to many.

It is a function that it was not intentionally designed to do, but has over the years provided to many many people. Sometimes to simply understand you are not alone, is sufficient to be able to make figuring out the challenges of day to day chile possible. To understand what is going on in a foreign country from another perspective is sufficient to make chile possible. So, the not so serious discussion on the forum has a very serious function.
