Crisco Vegetable Shortening Substitute

Postby sarahfriedlander » Wed Sep 14, 2011 4:30 pm

It's almost empanada making time and I would love to impress my boyfriend's family and have the "gringa" make the empanadas. I found a great recipe but am in need of vegetable shortening. In the US I always felt like vegetable shortening was synonymous with Crisco, so I really don't know what to buy here.

I'd appreciate name translations + the brand to look for. I'll probably be purchasing it at Líder or Unimarc if that helps.

Thanks!

- Sarah

For anyone interested this was the recipe I found: http://www.howjoyful.com/2010/04/recipe ... -chilenas/

try using a chilean recipe in spanish, that way the ingredients correspond to whats available in the supermarket.....

p.d i doubt you will find vegetable shorting in chile, but im no expert on that....... and just a note for vegetarians or bread lovers.... lots of places in chile use animal fat in the bread....

You should be able to use Manteca. They sell it near the butter. I believe it is a vegetable shorting which would be the same as Crisco.

Look for Manteca vegetal. It should be wrapped in the same size portions as butter and in a white-wax paper type wrapping.

Look for Ritz Manteca Vegetal in the margarine/butter section at a Lider near you. Leave it at room temp when ready to use.
Life's definitely good!
