And from the libertarian corner:

Lew Rockwell notes a NYT article questioning why Noam Chomsky has a welded steel door in his mind when it comes to the gubermint conspiracy theory on 911.

http://www.lewrockwell.com/blog/lewrw/a ... 94675.html

"...
Even the New York Times is syndicating Noam Chomsky's views on 911. This article about "what could have been, should have been, could be, might be" rests on Noam Chomsky's refusal from day one to even consider the possibility that the causes of 911 were something other than the impossible tale that the US Government began to put out an hour after those two gigantic buildings fell at free fall speed into their own footprints. What Noam Chomsky writes in the article is of little importance. What the article assumes without question, that the US Government's story is the truth, is of great importance. As one of the big time gatekeepers of the political middle-left to far-left consciousness and media, once Noam Chomsky bestowed his imprimatur on the US Government's 911 story indicating it was the truth of the matter, political left media and political left peace and justice organizations, including most Christian P&J groups, closed their minds and doors as completely as Rush Limbaugh to consideration of the possible falaciousness of the Government's story. Indeed, the "establishment left" media, e.g., Rachel Maddow, Chris Matthews. Lawrence O' Donnell, Ed Schultz, Amy Goodman, etc. regularly trashed the laborious investigatory work and detailed scientific work of 1500 Architects and Engineers for 911 Truth, Dr. David Ray Griffin and thousands of others—work that reveals gross, and impossible to reconcile, logical, scientific, and on the scene eye-witness evidence that put the lie to the 911 Commission Report—by referring to them in the derogatory contemporary nomenclature of "truthers" and "conspiracy nuts."
...."

which ends with this postscript regarding Chile:

"...
Postscript: Let us also remember to pray today for the repose of the soul of Salvador Allende, who was murdered 38 years ago on September 11, 1973, by Henry Kissinger operating on behalf of the US Government and American multi-national corporations.

Time approaches for the close of this day.

I remember while living in my first apartment in Chile in Santiago getting up that day with a slight hangover expecting an average Sept. 11 day of disorder in Santiago, sitting down and logging onto my main forum at the time (Gold Eagle) and reading the banter. I remember the post by someone that a crash occurred at the WTC and not paying attention much to that, then the post a second hit occurred, turning on my antenna-only TV and seeing the reports as all stations switched over to CNN Español live. I did not go to my Spanish class the next day at the Instituto Chileno-Norteamericano and neither did the other US citizens in my class.

In the days after with a complete halt to travel to and within the States, I wondered if I would even be traveling back in December as scheduled. There was the immediate accusation of who dunnit and the action in Afghanistan and then the QUESTIONS on certain mainly Libertarian corners of the Internet despite the boiling rage and fear of my countrymen. I came to my own conclusions and rejected the hysteria sweeping the States and when the drum began to beat for Iraqi blood and fascist security measures in the US, I vowed I would have nothing to do with it and thus began my journey into long-term expatriation.

Rest is history, noches.

There would be not enough space in this topic to list all the consequences of not only this but of the entire chain of similar events, even for those who "would better have nothing to do with it".

These consequences manifest in all aspects of our day-to-day life, thus making certain things a bit less than pleasant. The way people live, travel, work, or do business has irreversibly changed, during the last 10 - 20 years, and it changed dramatically.

And only God knows, how the events are going to unfold, in the future.

Have fun.

September 11 really did a number on me. When I was 10 y.o.38 years ago an intense firefight started in the early hours of the morning of September 11 in the hills of Playa Ancha in Valparaiso. I saw people running down the hill away from the military patrols, some of them were armed. I remember one of those armed men knocking at our neighbors' doors asking for help, in question of minutes the area was surrounded by police and the man arrested. This was the first time in my life I see real violence happening in front of my eyes. It would take another 28 years to see a different type of violence also in front of my very eyes.

By now I am living in New York City for more than 10 years, and the events of that morning will also mark me forever. On my way to work from Brooklyn to Manhattan, I saw one of the towers in flames, and later on watching in TV the final moments of them and many of its occupants. In the days after the catastrophe, the Navy/marine Corps and Army were called to form part in the disaster and recovery operations, and I was part of them. My mission in part was to serve as a security element in the morgue area at the lobby of the One American Express building. We worked for weeks in shifts of 12 hours.

In September 11, 2005 I was in Ali Al Salem Air Force Base in Kuwait heading for Iraq. I was in my first deployment to the Middle East after Sept 11

In September 11, 2008 I was in Al Asad Air Force Base in Iraq, heading toward the Korean Village, an air field in the middle of the Al Anbar province

An interesting comparison and contrast of 11 September 1973 versus 11 September 2001, by Noam Chomsky:

I had been working in Chile for only 6 weeks and an American colleague ran into the office saying "someone is bombing America", to which the answer was "they must be stupid". There followed the universal several hours or more of confusion before the story of the hijackers got out...

I was thinking what an interesting comparison and contrast of September 11th's from year to year as chronicled by Seabee.
(Good link, Andres. Very informative for new expats to Chile.)

@eeuu - your story - that explains a lot. Good story.
