Query re "Temporia Titular" visa

Postby Starlight » Tue Aug 30, 2011 10:57 pm

Hello,

I'm currently working in Chile on a "temporaria titular" visa for a large third level institute. I have a carnet and rut number. They pay me by cheque every month, as I understand it I am legally seen as a student interning at the institute and paid by a type of scholarship grant, even though I am working as a standard English teacher. My query is this: I have been offered a few hours at another institute, that won't affect my current work. The other institute has asked can I use my Rut to "issue boletas" so that they / I can legally pay tax? Would anyone know if this possible on my "temporaria titular" visa?

Many thanks in advance, any advice greatly appreciated.

If your visa says "temporaria" and not "estudiante" or "sujeta a contrato" you most certainly can issue boletas and work for another employer as you please. If they want you to issue boletas, you will need to do "inicio de actividades" at your closest IRS (SII) branch. This is a very simple procedure. You will need to fill out a form indicating your intended type of activity (capacitación or something like that I imagine) and present your Chilean ID. Do not forget to ask SII guys for your "clave internet". ¡Suerte!

I think you establish your own "clave internet" or PIN when you sign up for an online SII account.

If you issue paper boletas (old school) you need to order them from a print shop that does this as one of their services, then go to a SII office and get them stamped. There is a cost for each step.

A lot of clients do online boletas (boleta electronica). No cost. The process accounts for tax withholding. That is all I use these days.

We won't discuss that substantial part of the population that works outside the proper process as part of their tax-evasion way of life. It's same the part of the population that is the loudest in complaining about not enough public monies and subsidies being lavished upon them.

Muchas gracias por el consejo! :D
I will probably only be working maybe 4 hours for this new employer, is "issuing boletas" something I, the employee needs to do or does the employer usually do this before paying me? I was told that 10% of my wages would be taxed (withheld) and that I could claim it back next year, although I probably won´t be here then. So basically do I need to do anything - like go to the SII office, or once I tell my employer that my visa can "issue boletas" is that something the employer does before paying me?
