Have you investigated any MS opportunities in Chile? I mean a transfer within your company. If there are none maybe you could get a plan together to convince your seniors of the absolute necessity :D of posting you there, along with your family of course. It could take a few months to get that together but if you could pull it off, MS picks up the tab for moving and expenses, viola! You're in country and kept your $ in your pocket.

If you like it in Chile as a long term option, (as you already know, it ain't for everyone, that's for sure) You could contemplate the thought of staying after your assignment was over. Or just use your time there to buy a house, make contacts, etc. and do a bi-continent arrangement. Every year spend some time in the US, spend some time in Chile.

You may have already thought of that. Anyway, my 2p. Suerte.

I am actually Chilean, living outside the country for many years. Recently decided to move to Chile as well.
Chile works a bit different than other countries in terms of finding a job. You need to know the right people and learn your ways with the Chilean culture.
I recommend you try to get a job from your location in Santiago, that allows a couple of days off work a week; this will give you room to move around Chile and find a place or job that allows to work out of the city.

Santiago is not a bad place, you have the Andes at a half an hour drive and the beach at one hour drive. Central Chile is like California but way less densily populated, its not very green as the is a lot of population and ambiental regulations are not so strict, but it has a chance at becoming a greener place. Specially if more openminded people join the boat.
