I was in the exact same situation as you. I also did this at the NY Chilean consulate. As I was reading your thing, I actually wondered if I had posted this and forgot about it or something. The situation is that similar.

I just requested my passport though. I had everything. I didn´t attempt to change my chilean name as I rightly percieved it might create a shitstorm of paperwork.

Avoiding shitstorms of paperwork is often the best way...

yea, but for $500 (or whatever they charge you for renouncing these days) it might save someone's 401K from being wiped out by higher taxes and devaluation of the dollar.
