Re: cashing U.S. checks in Chile

On this forum there should be a couple of cases depositing US check in Chile into Chilean account with minimum delay (two weeks or so).

Further, exchangers, like AFEX or similar, if you are a "client" of theirs -- they do deposit US checks. I witnessed this "live" in Vina, when visiting one of the exchangers (not AFEX, don't remember the name).

Further, when looking to buy apartment, and contacting construction companies, some companies said they could take US check.

Further, a couple of banks said (in the past) -- they could take US checks, if I want to invest in their mutual fund(s).

There should be some other ways.

People -- please report your cases depositing US checks in Chile.

Canadian cheque into Chilean account 31 days to clear, I do it several times a year, never in a hurry, and it costs next to nothing. :D

So, into simply CLP-denominated acct., for there should be no CAD accounts in Chile right? If so, do they convert it using the CLP/CAD rate as of the day it clears, or when it is submitted, or?..

Yes a CLP account. The day they send it out 2-3 days after it is submitted, I don't worry about the exchange that much it is world market price of the day. Lose or gain a bit no big deal. Transfers always lose 3% percent or so, plus fees stiff fees often a percentage of the transfer. I can live with the 30 plus 1 day rule.
