wiki progress

Postby Andres » Sat Aug 06, 2011 8:25 pm

G'day all,

I appreciate all the insight into Chile I have received on this forum. My way of "giving back" is to introduce some structure into the wiki, which should encourage more content . . . which will benefit me and others. (-: I will usually make the changes on weekends.

I will use this thread to communicate the recent changes and encourage others to add content. You must log in to edit article content or add a comment on an article "discussion" page. Liaise with Charles (admin) to be able to log in. If you do not want to log in, but have content you wish to add or see an error which must be corrected, please PM me on this forum. Include "wiki" in the subject line so I know that is the purpose of your PM. Please suggest new articles if you do not wish to create them yourself.

Rarely will I write content. Usually I will copy from this forum or a credible websit. I might get content wrong. Please correct me if I am.

Progress this weekend:

* Started categories, which makes similar articles easier to find: Recipies, Glossaries, Locations.

* Renamed any recipe article I could find by adding "recipe" to the article name and adding it to the Recipies category.

* Renamed any glossary article I could find by adding "glossary" to the article name and adding it to the Glossaries category.

* Created an "Abbreviations" article and added it to the Glossaries category. Would someone please check if the information on the page is correct?

* Reorganized the "Regions, Cities and Towns" article. Moved any city/town-specific content to a new article on the respective city/town. In this article there are links to (not yet created) articles of principal Chilean cities. This reorganization should make it easier to add content you wish to preserve for others.

* Created "Santiago" and "Punta Arenas" articles. Added content to each, most of which was copied from this forum.

* Created a "Laws" article, which is the start of a list of laws. Would someone please check if the single entry there is correct? Article content on the different Chilean laws would be helpful.

* Created a "Test" article for experimenting how to code/format something before putting it into an article.

I am NOT a guru on how to edit or format wiki articles, but I am happy to attempt to answer anyone's question on how I did something. Usually, when I want to do something, I go to Wikipedia, find where someone has done it, and copy their method. It usually works. I might create a "sample formats" article if there is demand for it.

I intend to create an article which lists driving times between cities and towns. Can people please PM me driving times between locations, and any comments which an unfamilar driver should know? Please assume good weather and little traffic.

Created "Driving times" article. I included Px's data for PN<-->PA; other contributions are welcome and needed. Please PM me with times and trip comments if you do not want to get a wiki logon.

Just sent you PM on adding notes about the hot minefields along that highway, and the effects of the weather during certain months.

Actually there are many hot minefields down here that are close to the highways, so there may be a place to make a general XII Region note of that in the wiki.

Thanks. I have added you data to the "Driving times" article.

I did not expect to create Region articles so soon, but we can do it at any time. I have created a Region XII page at
http://www.allchile.net/chilewiki/index ... =RegionXII for you to add details.

Additional contributors are welcomed, with information regarding any city/town or region.

I was just looking through the wiki pages and WOW, what a great resource!! Thanks to those that have contributed and helped!

I was looking for the driving times article but had trouble finding it (had to use the search function). Does anyone know of the time estimates by google maps is accurate? It seems rather conservative for travelling up and down on a 120kph highway.

I did not know google maps provides driving times. My intent is to use only first-hand knowledge of driving times when filling in the table on the wiki article.

So, does anyone have driving times they wish to contribute in respect to any of the following legs? You can PM me or add it to the wiki yourself.

* Arica to Iquique to Antofagasta to Copiapo to La Serena to Santiago
* Mendoza, Arg. to Santiago, excluding time to do immigration and customs
* Valparíso to Santiago
* Santiago to San Antonio
* Santiago to Rancagua to Talca to Chillán to Concepción
* Chillán to Temuco to Osorno to Puerto Mont
* Futaleufú to Puerto Mont

Roughly, from Memory:
Antofagasta - Iquique is about 4.5 - 5 hours
Antofagasta - Copiapo 5.5 - 6 hours

* Chillán to Temuco to Osorno to Puerto Mont ------ Chillean to Temuco, about 1.5 hours.

Osorno to Frutillar (45 mins) Frutillar to Puerto Montt (35-40 mins). If I leave my house when the plane flies over Frutillar landing at the PM airport, I can reach the baggage claim at the Puerto Montt airport just as the passenger is picking up their bags. Although I failed to take in to consideration road conditions a few times when picking up my wife, and I am no longer allowed to wait until I see the plane fly overhead. It was fun to see if I could do it a few times.

* Futaleufú to Puerto Mont -- About another 50 years for them to complete the road. Seriously, it is about 12 hours from Puerto Montt, around through Osorno to Argentina and back in. Otherwise, it is overnight on the ferry (about 12 hours), and another 4 hour dirt road drive to Futa. That is all assuming that the weather is with you, via either route. The pass through to Argentina might be closed, the ferry might be broken down and / or grounded by weather. Same goes for airplanes.

By the way I am rebuilding the database, and tweaked it to be a little more comprehensive and also dump some of the more common words.

Still, Google likly has the more advanced algo for indexing the site.

By the way, not to make your life more complicated, officially the region numbers are being dropped in favor of the names. They quit making sense after they split the 10th region.

I think I would still number them however, as people still know them by those numbers.
