In Australia, hazard lights, especially while someone is stopped, means "I know I am violating the law but I am going to do it anyway." Is that the same in Chile?

exactly,

or you are going to come to a stop real fast because you were driving too fast for the condition of the motorway and you dont want to be rear ended,

or you are the last person at the back of the traffic and you dont want the person who is driving to fast to rear end you

A good example of this use of 4-way flashers/hazard lights is when you come a a construction zone with flag-persons halting traffic. The last person in the queue turns on the flashers and when the next vehicle arrives, that last-arriving driver turns on the flashers and the next-to-last turns his off. You even occasionally see this practice at the peajes on the Panamericana, esp at night when sleepy/inattentive drivers seem to predominate.

new wiki "politics" article

Postby Andres » Tue Oct 04, 2011 8:14 pm

Several of you might enjoy providing content to the new wiki politics article, where I have listed some questions a newcomer to Chile would wish to know.

The article is DRAFT, so needs verification before it has any validity.

seafood glossary

Postby Andres » Wed Mar 07, 2012 4:11 pm

I added a fish (which I bought at Lider last night) to the seafood glossary and added structure to the article.

producing spanish characters

Postby Andres » Wed Mar 07, 2012 8:15 pm

Because the issue of creating spanish characters came up again in the forum, I used forum data as content for a newly created 'spanish characters' article on the wiki:

Hola -

Can those with knowledge also maybe add a tipping section to the wiki. If it is already there, so sorry, I did use the search, but sometimes I am not so smart. Despite being here for a while, I am still confused about tipping in a general manner. We are generally over-tippers in US, so tipping here is confusing, and we would like to integrate on that matter a little better. Also, in Argentina (yes, I know, don't start), we actually had people chase us out to give us back our tips in locales where we thought we were supposed to tip but were not, apparently. [Note: no one in Chile has refused a tip from us.]

Taxis? Yes or no, and is there a difference if public or ejecutivo?

Portero/guardia? How is this done in a place where we are renting (either short term like an apart/hotel or longer term, like a vacation rental, or, as we are going to have now, a really long term rental?)

Delivery people like gas?

Correos? I understand we are supposed to tip the mailman, and have read a great blog entry about this on another blog. Last year the mailman came one day and had literally 30 pieces of mail, and we had been living there for months, and it was for people we know were previous residents (after answering millions of telemarketing calls for the same names, as well as some that must have been really old bc they were names that no one calls for). He and I sat there for 15 minutes going through the mail, no, that is not us, don't know them or where they are..... (Was I supposed to tip him for all that wrong mail, cuz I did not....)

Hair cuts? We understand no, since they are owners, as opposed to in US where they rent out a space, but there are many places that have several people, so do we tip here or not? If it is owner, yes or no? For the boys a 10% tip is not all that big a deal. For me with coloring and cutting and all that, it is more significant. As stated, we tip big in US but want to look like chilenos here and not be silly gringos.

Grocery store - we got this down, but would be good for others

Gardener? Just his pay, no?

Nana? Bonuses, tips, etc? Please help here

Any other people that we are supposed to tip that is NOT expected in US? In other words, are we (and others) ticking off chilenos by NOT tipping where it is expected? Like what about the bathroom attendant lady?

We tip tour guides? Yes or no and how much?

Also, as part of this section or another, maybe some advice about dealing with the people at the airport when you arrive. I think many people are overwhelmed when they come out of the luggage area (after an overnight flight and the reciprocity fee and immigration STAMP STAMP STAMP and then the aduana) and all those people assault you and wear those badges that make them look official and grab your ticket for taxi oficial or transvip or whatever, and then the next thing you know they want some crazy a** 5.000 CLP tip for putting your bags into the cab, etc.

pl

PD: Thanks to everyone who is taking time and effort to put into the wiki. We have used it often and very helpful.

Ñame, ñangotar,La Ñeta....Yo tú no tomaría el té. Ok, I'm good, now onto a response.

This much I know, tip the driver of the garbage truck during the week of September 18 and for Christmas. Why the driver? He will actually share it with the fellows on his truck unlike the fellow I handed the first round of tips to who pocketed the whole thing.
When tipping food servers the expected amount is ten percent. If you pay with a card you must state that you would like to add the the ten percent. The only time servers have asked me if I would like to add anything to the total was near the Mall Arauco area. Other than that you need to bring it up as there is no tip line on the receipt.
We agree to disagree.

Fixed up the Spanish Characters wiki page to clarify ambiguities: http://www.allchile.net/chilewiki/index ... characters

Hopefully it is complete now.

new "tipping and bonuses" article

I created a "tipping and bonuses" wiki article. But I need someone to provide the content (since I am new to Chile).
You can PM me the data if you do not wish to enter it into the wiki yourself.

There has been considerable discussion on those topics already on the foro -- was that content not useful? Or do you need help putting existing content into wiki format?

Px

To be blunt, but with no intent to offend:

I often add newly-posted forum data to the wiki when I see it.
But when someone raises an issue which was discussed at various times on the wiki, I should not have to trawl for the data that someone else probably knows "off the top of their head".

Since it is rare for anyone else to contribute to the wiki, more can be accomplished by me concentrating my efforts on creating or improving wiki articles than mining for data. I am not trying to be lazy, just use resources more efficiently.

I encourage everyone to put data directly into the wiki, but even if data is provided to me in a "raw" format it will take me a lot less time to get it in the wiki than if I must go looking for data . . . also: not everything on the forum is valid and I do not have any easy way to check its veracity.
