How can you tell if the meat is chilean? Better yet, is there chilean beef in the supermarkets (ex. Jumbo). All that I can find is either Paraguayan or Argentinean. What brand of meat is "grass-fed" or organic? As I did go to Gourmeat and they told me they don't have anything organic.

You can't get (i.e commercially buy - getting a sheep from a local campesino is a different story) organic meat, poultry or fish in Chile. Or rather, I've never heard of any in the time I've been here. The Angus at Gourmeat is grass fed afaik, but if you read back, I'm pretty sure that someone said that most Chilean beef (in Jumbo it says "Nacional" on the Chilean beef) is grass fed.

I walked by the U.S. imported meet section the other day at Lider and my stomach did a flip.

At least down south, the small butchers in the area around the lake will get you pretty much anything you want ( the stranger things you will have to order early). In fact, buying meet at the supermarket is really for the lazy or suckers. Even at the restaurants we go to, I know where there beef comes from because the owners shop at the same butchers we do. I also know where their vegetables and most of their other ingredients come from, because we know the growers personally.

Hell, I likely even know the cow they are selling. I just chased next month's t-bone out of my yard. Him and his friends will be sorry they ran through my fence.

Often the biggest mystery on our table is the source of the Chilean organic wine.

Yea, you know I have not given it much thought. Since moving to Chile I eat a lot less red meat. The U.S. has had it as a daily dietary recommendation for years. It is in your face everywhere. The beef industry crack pushers work hard.

On a busy week, I bet I only eat red meat two to three times a week. More typically once a week. Not that I am actively trying to eat less red meat, just there seems to be a lot of better alternatives avaible in Chile. I eat a lot more seafood and chicken.

Soyena, have you tried http://www.distribuidoramagdalena.cl for chicken? It´s much, much cheaper than in the supermarket.

I have no problem getting good/fresh seafood from Unimarc, Jumbo etc. Have you been to Mercado Central? You can´t get fresher than that!

Great info Tombi!!! Yes it is so much cheaper than in the supermarkets and mercado organico, which costs around 10000/chicken.

As for seafood, I wonder why but I've tried Mercado Central various times but with no luck, maybe it's cus I decide if the fish is fresh by it's head (love to make soup with fish head), and most time it's just not edible (kindda stinks).

Eitherway, Yes, I do find better luck with frozen seafoods :) love those.
