Questions about Doing Business in Chile

Postby bigalfromtikal » Thu Jul 21, 2011 9:21 pm

I am interested in moving to Chile to start up a division of my company that is starting to grow in Chile. My marketing will be 100% online and payments can be accepted via credit card. My questions are...

1) Are online payments via Credit Card very common in Chile?
2) Do people prefer to use DineroMail over using Credit Cards?

Also, there are many websites that are in my same market in Chile today. All of them give the customer the option to make a deposit directly into their bank account. Is that the most common way for people to complete online transactions in Chile? Being that I am a foreigner that option seems impossible for me since i will be unable to open a bank account in Chile(from what I read on this forum). If that is the most common way then I would need to to either find out a way around that or reconsider doing business in Chile.

Any advice anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Im in the process of building a online store for a big chilean brand, we plan on using Transbank Webpay+........... our target cliente are those who a) have credit cards and b)have a disposable income who have a choice to choose quality over price

It is all going to depend on what your product is... and who your target clients are....... you need to understand Chilean consumer habits before you venture into a start-up like that in chile

i would say online credit card in chile is not that common in comparision to other countries, the biggest problem is the low quality sites, and bad SEO, half the the time no oneknows the store exist, and when they find its so hard to make a purchase, and when you do make a purchase there are that many screw ups you dont want to try that again!

(both the dineromail and transbank allow for debit card purchases, there are more debit cards than credit cards)
Plan N....... Back On track

zer0nz, Thanks a lot for the feedback. My site will be a simple, yet very professional landing page selling one product for roughly $19.000 pesos. In actuality I could run this business from the US, I just wouldn't mind living in Chile for a bit to ship the product faster and maybe collect cash payments in person if the credit card issue was that big of a deal. Thanks again, any other feedback you can throw my way would be greatly appreciated.

cash on delievery is a huge thing here.....

but chileans being unreliable it costs a fortune when no one is home, hense why we are moving towards a credit card based payment only

Wow. Good catch. Yeah that technically is my account and name but its my crazy dad that is obsessed with buying and selling coins. So if you want any coins you're going to have to hit him up through Ebay, haha.

My online company has NOTHING to do with coins.
