Speaking from my own experience from the airport in Santiago ... we did not have the appropriate papers and was directed to the airport pdi office. Luckily they were able to verify our parenthood through the reg civil online system and the only effect was a 30 min delay. From the words of the officer ... "let's see if the online system works today, if not you cannot travel with your child" .

Is your child chilean? We have 3 kids (aussie born) and have never needed this. We always travel with birth certs for all the kids, and have had to show these, but never anything else. We have had other friends (also with foreign born kids) be stopped and grilled about their kids, but I think they weren't carrying birth certs. Just wondering if this is a regulation or one of those PDI quasi-rules that some officers enforce and not others?

Yes, our daughter is chilean (as well as swedish) citizen. My wife is chilean.

So, family of 4, both parents, 2 kids, all born in Canada. Leaving Canada and flying into Chile. Also taking road trips into Argentina and Uruguay. What, if any, documents do we need? I was only planning on bringing passports for all of us but now wonder if I need more?

I don't recall any additional requirements beyond just a passport on the embassy sites.

My Google-fu was weak until now. Just found this on the Canadian Travel Reports for Chile website (http://www.voyage.gc.ca/countries_pays/ ... p?id=54000):

"Minors should also always carry a birth certificate that shows both parents' names."

So even if both parents are present, still need the birth certificate naming them to prove it.
