Mobile Phone Monitoring

Postby Kia.Kruse » Wed Jun 29, 2011 10:27 am

Can anyone answer a simple question? Can a normal mobile phone be tracked, traced, monitored or be used while it is turned off?
I have read that a mobile phone can be remotely turned on with the correct software...any truth?? Thanks

paranoia......

You need to be worried if someone has had access to your phone and can install some very specialised software on to it...... (not cheap)

We use to do it for work when investigating fraud within the company, but you must have access to the phone, and it must be a common brand that the software is comptaible with, so a old "dumb" phone is a lot harder than a new "smart phone"

failing that, you must bribe someone in the phone company (this was usually the easier method) And they say NZ is not corrupt?

If you want to be certain, remove the battery or place it in a sealed metal box or can that will block the radio signals.

I wouldn't worry about the phone but you better check your clothing for bugs.

ZDnet is fairly mainstream, usually lacking in tinfoil. Lots written on the subject. Believe that which comforts you:

first paras

The FBI appears to have begun using a novel form of electronic surveillance in criminal investigations: remotely activating a mobile phone's microphone and using it to eavesdrop on nearby conversations.

The technique is called a "roving bug," and was approved by top U.S. Department of Justice officials for use against members of a New York organized crime family who were wary of conventional surveillance techniques such as tailing a suspect or wiretapping him.

Nextel cell phones owned by two alleged mobsters, John Ardito and his attorney Peter Peluso, were used by the FBI to listen in on nearby conversations. The FBI views Ardito as one of the most powerful men in the Genovese family, a major part of the national Mafia.

Thanks for the great article. I have also heard that a slick PI can lets say, zero in on your home and detect all mobile phone transmissions and choose whom to spy on.The best idea is not to own one!

I work with a company that has us all put or cell phones in a cookie tin that the lid is put on before a board meeting, this is so it can’t be remotely turned on and people can listen in to the meeting, cheaper and easier than a cell blocker system. Some people carry small cough drop or breath mint tins that fit their cell phone so they can kill it with removing the battery, it uses the faraday cage principle.

Can't be too safe these days ;)

It's common in Vancouver because everyone has a smart phone.

Smart phones are just as easy targets are laptops. They are just computers, with voice mail. If your company gave you the phone, chances are your company "owns" (in the hacker sense) your phone because they also got the emergency wipe and other goodies with it.
