Health Insurance specifics

Postby Estoy tratando » Mon Jun 27, 2011 10:37 am

Hello All,

First let me say thank you to this board and all it's members for providing such detailed and straightforward information for those of us considering a move to Chile. I have found the answers to many of my questions right here.

I, along with my mother, have made the decision to move abroad in approximately 12 months. Before we can commit to Chile there are a couple of outstanding questions I have specifically around the Health Insurance schemes. I have read all of the related posts (and mea culpa if i somehow missed these answers) but did not see the exact detail I am seeking.

I am 43 and in good health. I can certainly wait a few weeks/months to sort out insurance. However, my mother will be 70 by that time and will need to be covered ASAP. The kicker is that she has had extensive cardiac repair (due to a childhood disease) including valve replacements, stents and a pacemaker. She is currently in good health but requires a ton of medication. My questions are:

Can/will she be denied coverage by an ISAPRE due to preexisting conditions?
If they do cover her will the cost be so prohibitive as to make the move economically unfeasible?
Will there be a waiting period where she will be without coverage even if she is accepted?
Are there "family" plans such as in the U.S. where she might be able to get coverage along with me?

Any help is appreciated.

She will not get insurance..... they wont touch her

My gf in her 20s, perfect health, can never change insurance for her entire life because she had one operation! now the other isapres will not cover her she is lucky she is already with one who are now obliged to cover her for life because they approved and performed the operation,

Unless there is a change in law, you wont get isapre cover for her

also another thread says anyone over 50 or 60 i can not remember will not get cover purely based on age.....
Plan N....... Back On track

.
No idea if this is worth mentioning but here it is to yell at, investigate, denigrate, discredit, confirm, deny, whatever. Max ages for application in bold. I know nothing and am entirely irresponsible for even mentioning the subject ...

Thanks patagoniax! From my half ass translation I take it the plans mentioned in that article are "supplemental" in nature. The one from Clinica Las Condes looks interesting (but pricy) to augment FONASA.

Thanks again!

There is a pending supreme court case regarding age discrimination and insurance pricing / exclusion in Chile. Not exactly sure what the current status of that suit is at the moment.

I believe part of the case has to do with young women of child bearing age being charged much more (I remember it as almost 2 times more than men of the same age), discrimination happens at both ends, over 70 and 18-35 year old women.

Yea, there is likely a bunch of them going around, but this one was specific regarding people over 65 or something.
