Milk in La Serena

Postby swdchile » Sun Jun 26, 2011 12:18 am

I started to, but am not looking through 42 pages of search results for milk (let alone in La Serena)! So, I'm taking the easy way out. I want to make sour cream and need butter milk and heavy cream. Any suggestions?

It's pretty hard to get hold of stuff like that. Sometimes the Jumbo and (I think) the Lider have "fresh" non-UHT cream in plastic bags in the refrigerated section, next to canned cream IIRC. It's a bit hit-and-miss though and it's just normal single cream that pours like milk. I have never seen any fresh milk and haven't looked for buttermilk.

You might try asking at the vegetarian shop, Innatura, down Las Higueras. I think they told my wife in the past that they can get hold of fresh unpasteurized milk. I'm sure there are also people selling goat milk in the valley but don't have a contact.

James (from the UK).

I just ate there the other day. They're just down the street from me. Thanks. I'll let you know what I find. Taking a drive today and if I see one cow, I'm tempted to stop and ask about it.

My English speaking doctor also has a flower and goat farm in the Elqui valley, if you're interested In an outing while looking for interesting food alternatives. I keep meaning to take the kids out there to pet the goats. The website is at Goosefootfarm.cl, so you can find it and see what kind of things they have.

When I was looking into living in La Serena (in the end, never made it that far north!) I ran across the International English Spanish Association, (IESA) group. They have links on their site to a resources for finding fresh goat milk, among other things, along with the prices as well. Everything sounds delicious, though I can't personally speak to how it tastes, so can't provide any sort of endorsement. You might want to check it out to see if there is anything of interest to you there.

Thanks, I know of IESA. My wife's a member. But to break the monotony, I'm working (for cheese!) one day a week at GooseFootFarm in La Serena. The owner has good old fashioned milk cows and I couldn't be happier. :D

Working for cheese, I love it! And real milk cows, wow. I'd heard they existed but haven't actually seen one in so long I was beginning to doubt they existed. If I didn't like it so much down south this could quite possibly be enough to make me want to relocate to La Serena!

I never found butter milk (one of the ingredients of soda bread), so normal milk and lemon juice had to substitute. I have a recipe somewhere if you need.
You are disturbing me. I am picking mushrooms.

Thanks Frank, but someone let me know there's sour cream at Unimarc and Lider. I just didn't know where to look.
BTW, I use the sour cream in a Chicken Paprikash w/ dumplings recipe. Let me know if your interested and I'll write it up for you.

I'm so jealous! We don't have any real milk in my town (that I've discovered yet, at least), though the consolation prize is plenty of great artisan beer.

Strangely enough, this is the second time in as many months that I've found myself impressed by a photograph of cows...
