Ash cloud caused VISA overstay

Postby shift » Tue Jun 21, 2011 7:30 pm

Im traveling with a few mates.
We were due to fly out last week but our flight was canceled due to the ash cloud so we rescheduled for the next available flight which was 6 days later.
We're all from New Zealand and are flying back there, but the cancellations have caused us to overstay our visa by 2-3 days.
Ive done what research i can by searching on google and from what ive seen we'll have to pay for a few days of overstaying. Is this the case even though our overstay was forced upon us?
I guess the big question is, what exactly do we do about this?
I have my original boarding passes from which we would have left the country on time. Can we just show up at the airport and get everything resolved there or do we need to go elsewhere first?
Any info would be very much appreciated!
Thanks

If you are flying out of Chile at SCL, the PDI/International Police have an office there (the area where you line up for outgoing passport control) to pay the overstay fine (can someone confirm?).

If leaving Chile elsewhere, you will have to pay the fine first at the nearest Extranjería office.

At SCL, you could try to see if they let you pass but prepare to pay the fine after they make you feel like you committed a capital offense.

yea, got to do it at the immigration office. PDI will jump up and down at the airport, and possibly send you to immigration downtown anyway. Explain why, in your most clueless and helpless gringo way, and they might give you a stamp for free.

You can not be the only people running in to this problem in Santiago.
