Re: Fruit available in Chile

Just a thought: Two weeks ago we bought lots of avocados. I was getting tired of eating it and searched for other ways to consume it. Take 3 to 4 small avocados, 4 cups of milk, cocoa powder to taste and sugar / syrup / honey to taste. Blend well until smooth. It tastes almost just like chocolate milkshake!!

That reminds me of a recipe for Chocolate Avocado Pie that I'll spare you the recipe for as it isn't that interesting beyond the name. However an Avocado pie, without the chocolate, is worth a try:

Avocado Pie
Crust:
1 1/2 c. finely crushed cookie crumbs or graham crackers
6 T. melted butter
1/2 tsp. cinnamon

Mix together with a fork until it is uniformly crumbly. Press the mixture firmly into a 8 or 9 inch pie plate with your fingertips, starting at the sides and working inwards. Put in freezer to firm up a bit while you make the filling.

Filling:
2 big, ripe avocados (or 3-4 small ones)
6 to 8 T. lime juice
1 can sweetened condensed milk (maybe available at Jumbo sometimes)
1 tsp. grated lime peel (optional but good)
Whipped cream for topping (optional)

Scoop out the avocado and smash real well, the filling should be very smooth, then add the lime juice, lime peel, and sweetened condensed milk. Taste for tartness and add more lime juice if necessary. It should be quite tart.

Pour into the pie shell and chill for at least 2 hours.

Whipped cream makes this pie absolutely sinful.

Hi Du Plessis - fellow SA here!
I bought mangoes in Jumbo the other day, they were super nice!! Had to let them ripen a little bit first though. I do believe they were imported, and the price was ok, not everyday cheap though.
I haven't seen lychees....I miss lychees!!! Or passion fruit, but I bought a Valdivieso sparkling white wine that also had passion fruit in it (they refer to passion fruit as 'maracuya' here from what I've seen).
Cheers!

Catt - :)

I buy mangoes during summer from Jumbo (delivered) or the local feria. They are just a tiny bit cheaper than in Sydney (which means they cost an arm and a leg), but they are worth it. Nice and sweet. The skins don't go yellow, they stay green. My kids go nuts for them.

Passion fruit - you can buy the bags of pulp with seed in teh frozen section, but it has a weird after taste. Would probably work in a fruit salad, but other than that...

Kiwi is good at the moment and I have a naartjie tree in my garden, yum!

1. I normally freeze the pie and the filling tastes like an ice cream
2. When I do not freeze the pie, I would add a package of unflavored gelatin (and a little water to dissolve it) to make it easier to cut
3. Is there such a thing as non-fat diet whipped cream? :-)

Lucuma is lucuma. There is no translation I am aware of, other than "eggfruit" from some old Peruvian guide books, but I have never heard anyone use that term.

Lucuma flavoured ice cream is one good reason to stay in Chile.

Anything Lucuma flavored or anything related to lucuma including the pureed lucuma is a reason to go to and/or stay in chile

The natives around here sell tunas next to the road in buckets full. For 5 litre bucket, about 700 CLP.

We also love papaya and mangoes. We stay very close to farms selling avos, mangoes and papayas in bulk.

Mangos in Chile where??

in the north, pica and matilla (oasis near iquique) and arica valleys (azapa, camarones)

The figs are a favourite of mine as they are in season mid summer then I'm in Chile.

And mangos, well yes there are a few mangos grown, but not like India, SEA, Central America or imports to Vancouver as the ataulfos from Mexico have started to fill the markets, yum yum.
