Moving in November

Postby Kia.Kruse » Fri Jun 17, 2011 7:10 am

I will be moving to Chilein November. Just a bit of advice please. I need to send some clothing ahead of my arrival, can any suggest where I could send about 4 boxes for pick up when I arrive to Chile?

Reading about all of the problems of banks, I will receive from my private school pension an amount of less that 4000E per month. Will this cause any problems? Delays, unessacary investigations or red tape? Would it be best to have my funds deleivered to my girlfriends account?

Hi,

I don't really know how to answer about sending clothing ahead. Could you send it to your girlfriend's house? What service are you using? If DHL or something, perhaps they could hold it for you for a few days in their office?

Can't really help you with your bank question either, sorry. Maybe someone who has some experience will pick up the thread.

Welcome to Chile (sincere, not sarcastic). It's really quite a nice place as long as you're reasonably flexible.

You can use air shipping and have someone pick up at Santiago's airport (in the freight area) but this is not cheap (I spent ~500 euros for about a cubic meter worth of boxes 4 years ago) and I'm not sure is worth it for clothing, unless it's specialty apparel (e.g. high value sports gear) that you'll have a hard time finding here, or that will cost you a bundle (as the nicer stuff usually does).

If excess baggage fees < DHL/air cargo scam, decision easy.

At $100 or less per bag for extra baggage it is often best and cheapest to have it fly with you.

I have had success sending boxes down UPS. You can then pick them up at their offices at the airport.
