If those stats are accurate, it will be a great tool to shut up those (or at least get them to quiet down a bit :) )who constantly grumble about how expensive Chile is. We find that EVERYTHING here is cheaper than in Sydney, but when so often seeing those on the forum complaining about how expensive it is here, I can't help but feel like I'm the delusional one.

Another stat to add is cost of purchasing cars. We find that it is around 30% cheaper here than in Australia, but haven't done formal calculations, just rough comparisons.

Also, cost of help - in Sydney, our nanny charged A$20 p/h for babysitting (on weekends A$25 p/h), here we can get our nana to stay the entire day for the same price and she'll clean while at it :)

are you trying to get hits to your blog or are you really interested in the topic?

those numbers you posted are crap!, get online and do you own research, compare online supermarkets in chile such as Jumbo and Aus such as woolworths, look for the exact same makes model, or very similiar... you will find somethings are more expensive here, and cheaper there, your examples make out chile to be dirt cheap!, in my opionion its the same over all!

also Do you really believe the price of that TV comparison? how many variations are there in a 40" Tv?, or that apartment comparision? when did you last find an apartment for $280k clp?... the site lacks data to be useful

Zeronz, I just scanned over it, so if they are crap (and I did wonder how accurate it was), they can't be too far off though. What have you found to be cheaper in Aus than here? Do you find Chile expensive? I'm not doubting you, I'm just wondering if my lifestyle is so different to others, as I agree that it is much cheaper here. Having said that, not Bolivia or Thailand cheap, just cheaper.

Honestly, on those specific stats, I thought 52% on the food was being generous to aus. We can buy aussie beef here for 1/3 of the price we get it in aus. And kiwis are only 40c (AUD) a kilo in iqq today :). But the other side of the coin is that minimum and average wage in aus is much greater than here, and therefore the cost of labour is astronomical (relative to chile). If you are emigrating with the dollars in your pocket then this type of comparison is valuable (if accurate), but if you emigrate to another country and plan on earning an income there, you have to take into account local wages.

I would like to see and item for item comparison as well.

The food is more or less bang on, but how much are the Adidas X series with the black strip in Chile compared to Australia in the Adidas store. Because if you got to Franklin to buy them they are going to cheap knock offs that are half price. And be specific with the 40" TV as well. Is one a Sony V Series and the other a Lider brand?

Some things in Chile are cheaper... but anything of quality costs you an arm and a leg.

Wow...Australia must be a very expensive place to live. I am from the States and I would have to say my cost of living here is about double what it would be in the States, and the quality here is much much lower for that price. If I had the same standard of living here that I had in the States it would probably be more like 4 times more expensive. I would like to mention that I am from Oklahoma, one of the cheaper places to live in the country. For someone who is from New York or L.A. or other expensive areas then it is a different story, I am just speaking of MY personal experience.

.
One of the many problems inherent in those surveys is the inability to truly compare good apples with good apples.

A claw hammer in Chile for the equivalent of USD25 has a poorly fitting wooden handle, is made in China, and won't last a season. A USD25 claw hammer in Vancouver has an all-steel construction, anti-vibration handle, and will probably serve for 20 years.

A 200 gram tin of tuna in Chile may cost only a little more than the same 200 grams of tinned tuna in Vancouver, but not even your cat would touch the Chilean product.

The same sized tin of peaches in CL costs twice as much as it does in Vancouver, but it tastes more of tin than of peaches.

Compare the quality+quantity of what you receive in CL with the equivalent quality+quantity of the goods and services of certain other locations, and CL will not often look like any sort of bargain.

Having lived in both Chile and Australia I find Australia much cheaper only because I earn 3 times more in Australia. I do agree that certain items are about half the price in Chile and may seem cheap but when you only earn 1/3 of what you would in Aus then half price isnt so cheap. I do agree that when we go to Chile everything is so cheap for us but that's only because we arrive with AUD in our pockets. 8)

Index tool is cool for a ballpark first look. Assuming a reasonable margin of error obviously.

I'm with JessicaK. I live in US Midwest. A great many things are cheaper and simultaneously of higher quality here. I think Otravers said it before in another post, US is a consumer paradise, at least insofar as manufactured goods are concerned, be it computers or clothing, etc. Fresh food, wine and labor are cheaper in Chile, with the fresh food and wine being of generally high quality and the labor....quite variable. Real estate is cheaper here than in Vina, but Vina is probably not very representative of Chilean average, and US Midwest is pretty cheap by US standards.

Australia must be quite expensive indeed.
