Reclaiming citizenship

Postby tigre » Wed Jun 08, 2011 4:52 pm

I know someone who was born in Chile (to American parents) but left when she was five and opted for US citizenship (dual citizenship was not an option at the time). Would it be very difficult (if even possible) to obtain dual citizenship even if she does not move back to Chile? What would be the pros and cons of this arrangement? Thanks!

It's not impossible (yes, you he/she can get dual citizenship) and not too complicated (at developing world standards). If the person is in Chile, it's simpler than doing it from outside. My mother in law (who renounced her Chilean citizenship in the 60's) did it from Australia with no big issues and my husband, who was born in Australia did it from here. It was reasonably easy and cheap.

Pro's, no need for visa to Chile and other Latin countries, con's, going through the process.

Wasn't she thrown in jail in the US recently? And in Italy, too, as I recall.

The system has failed if they have let her out. She is truly a pox upon this planet.

Has she checked to see if she has a rut number with the civil registery?

If she has a rut, then she is still a citzen.

If not, then she needs to document that she was born in chile.
