Ok - cheers for the help people.

If things aren't sorted in 1 month job-wise then I will go the Bolvia/Argentina route I think.

Not exactly on the subject, but related... what happens when someone who has overstayed their tourist visa tries to leave Chile? Do they get fined big time? Is the fine based on time passed? Just curious...

you need to go and pay the fine first, then you can leave, if you search the forum all the links and information on how to do this are in a post somewhere....

I can apply for his temporary visa (and through there permanent residency) simply because we live together and are common-law.

I also recently heard this from the Extranjeria, in Santiago. They said they were aware that a lot of foreigners were in recognised defacto relationships and not married and therefore it was possible to apply as a 'dependant' on a temp visa application if you were indeed the defacto partner in the relationship, and could prove it with documentation eg sworn statements, joint bank account/bills etc
Haven't heard of anyone actually getting it through but Extranjeria said that it was something they would look at and I got the impression had looked at. They were the ones that suggested it during the conversation.

Actually you are applying for the Visa on your own merits and your relationship is a factor in the application. There is no guarantee you will get the Visa, but it’s a bit of a joke if you don’t.
