El excremento, la base de la civilización

I always knew, in my heart of hearts, that this was true. And now there is some serious study to confirm those beliefs, that shit, or rather communal defecation, indeed forms the basis for what we have come to regard as advanced civilisations.

The Jewel Net of Indra wrote:Far away in the heavenly abode of the great god Indra, there is a wonderful net which has been hung by some cunning artificer in such a manner that it stretches out infinitely in all directions. In accordance with the extravagant tastes of deities, the artificer has hung a single glittering jewel in each "eye" of the net, and since the net itself is infinite in dimension, the jewels are infinite in number. There hang the jewels, glittering like stars in the first magnitude, a wonderful sight to behold. If we now arbitrarily select one of these jewels for inspection and look closely at it, we will discover that in its polished surface there are reflected all the other jewels in the net, infinite in number. Not only that, but each of the jewels reflected in this one jewel is also reflecting all the other jewels, so that there is an infinite reflecting process occurring.

This is how the metaphor of "Indra's Net" is described in the Wikipedia.

As in each of the jewels there are reflected all the other jewels in the net -- exactly so, in each and every tiny piece of shit that we ever encounter in our lives there is the same, unforgettable, smell of all the Shit of this World.
The time that you spend reading this sentence could be employed to better advantage in almost any other way.

Penquista cries himself to sleep when I admit to reading El Mercurio. It's unfortunate that Chileans are deprived by their evil government of the opportunity to read the BBC articles in Spanish, wherein the history of Letrinamerican shit is concerned. It is so much a part of their rich heritage. And so many don't know squat about it.

If you promise not to tell I will admit to buying El Mercurio when in CHile and reading it online. The classifieds are better than those in El Siglo. I have been known to peek at LUN but usually only for pictures of women in two piece swimsuits rioting on the beach.

Speaking of El Mercurio, and excrement, the Sunday edition has a Revista Domingo with an article on "the wild side of Puerto Natales." The EMOL webside has a series of photos from the same article. There are a couple of shots taken in my village. Trouble is, that is not Puerto Natales.

They, El Mercurio, managed to publish all the photos without a single image actually showing Puerto Natales. The pictures were all of places of the region away from Natales. Perhaps Natales is too working-class for El Mercurio.

The captions didn't do very well, either. They could not even spell the place-names. "Baguales" same out as "Bagueles."
