forum "discussion" tactics - FWIW

Postby greg~judy » Sun May 22, 2011 8:30 am

edited to remove reference(s) to potentially misinterpreted word "disinformation"
while definitely valid in an (objective) media sense...
is seemingly offensive to some in this forum sense
posted solely with the intention to challenge certain styles and usage
that (at least subjectively) diminish certain threads and participants
FWIW

FYI and just as an experiment, of course...
check and see how many of the "discussion" tactics below...
have been used by various players, on various forum threads?

btw1 - some of these, obviously, are not used in forum topics, by individuals
(i.e. they are only used by gubmints and media)
this will limit realistic "individual" techniques to about 15 ...!

btw2 - and not to be hypocritical...
even g~j may have used a few of these (quite infrequently of course)
so ask yourselves the same question - "discussion" tactics, used or not?

Preface: This handy set of rules covers most of the games which "normal people" play on the Internet (and offline). When you know the tricks, you'll be able to spot the games. Even if you've read this list before, you might be surprised at how useful it is to brush up on these tricks.

1. Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil. Regardless of what you know, don't discuss it -- especially if you are a public figure, news anchor, etc. If it's not reported, it didn't happen, and you never have to deal with the issues.

2. Become incredulous and indignant. Avoid discussing key issues and instead focus on side issues which can be used show the topic as being critical of some otherwise sacrosanct group or theme. This is also known as the "How dare you!" gambit.

3. Create rumor mongers. Avoid discussing issues by describing all charges, regardless of venue or evidence, as mere rumors and wild accusations. Other derogatory terms mutually exclusive of truth may work as well. This method works especially well with a silent press, because the only way the public can learn of the facts are through such "arguable rumors". If you can associate the material with the Internet, use this fact to certify it a "wild rumor" which can have no basis in fact.

4. Use a straw man. Find or create a seeming element of your opponent's argument which you can easily knock down to make yourself look good and the opponent to look bad. Either make up an issue you may safely imply exists based on your interpretation of the opponent/opponent arguments/situation, or select the weakest aspect of the weakest charges. Amplify their significance and destroy them in a way which appears to debunk all the charges, real and fabricated alike, while actually avoiding discussion of the real issues.

5. Sidetrack opponents with name calling and ridicule. This is also known as the primary attack the messenger ploy, though other methods qualify as variants of that approach. Associate opponents with unpopular titles such as "kooks", "right-wing", "liberal", "left-wing", "terrorists", "conspiracy buffs", "radicals", "militia", "racists", "religious fanatics", "sexual deviates", and so forth. This makes others shrink from support out of fear of gaining the same label, and you avoid dealing with issues.

6. Hit and Run. In any public forum, make a brief attack of your opponent or the opponent position and then scamper off before an answer can be fielded, or simply ignore any answer. This works extremely well in Internet and letters-to-the-editor environments where a steady stream of new identities can be called upon without having to explain criticism reasoning -- simply make an accusation or other attack, never discussing issues, and never answering any subsequent response, for that would dignify the opponent's viewpoint.

7. Question motives. Twist or amplify any fact which could so taken to imply that the opponent operates out of a hidden personal agenda or other bias. This avoids discussing issues and forces the accuser on the defensive.

8. Invoke authority. Claim for yourself or associate yourself with authority and present your argument with enough "jargon" and "minutiae" to illustrate you are "one who knows", and simply say it isn't so without discussing issues or demonstrating concretely why or citing sources.

9. Play Dumb. No matter what evidence or logical argument is offered, avoid discussing issues with denial they have any credibility, make any sense, provide any proof, contain or make a point, have logic, or support a conclusion. Mix well for maximum effect.

10. Associate opponent charges with old news. A derivative of the straw man usually, in any large-scale matter of high visibility, someone will make charges early on which can be or were already easily dealt with. Where it can be foreseen, have your own side raise a straw man issue and have it dealt with early on as part of the initial contingency plans. Subsequent charges, regardless of validity or new ground uncovered, can usually them be associated with the original charge and dismissed as simply being a rehash without need to address current issues -- so much the better where the opponent is or was involved with the original source.

11. Establish and rely upon fall-back positions. Using a minor matter or element of the facts, take the "high road" and "confess" with candor that some innocent mistake, in hindsight, was made -- but that opponents have seized on the opportunity to blow it all out of proportion and imply greater criminalities which, "just isn't so." Others can reinforce this on your behalf, later. Done properly, this can garner sympathy and respect for "coming clean" and "owning up" to your mistakes without addressing more serious issues.

12. Enigmas have no solution.
Drawing upon the overall umbrella of events surrounding the "crime" and the multitude of players and events, paint the entire affair as too complex to solve. This causes those otherwise following the matter to begin to loose interest more quickly without having to address the actual issues.

13. Alice in Wonderland Logic.
Avoid discussion of the issues by reasoning backwards with an apparent deductive logic in a way that forbears any actual material fact.

14. Demand complete solutions. Avoid the issues by requiring opponents to solve the "crime" at hand completely, a ploy which works best for items qualifying for rule 10.

15. Fit the facts to alternate conclusions.
This requires creative thinking unless the "crime" was planned with contingency conclusions in place.

16. Vanishing evidence and witnesses. If it does not exist, it is not fact, and you won't have to address the issue.

17. Change the subject.
Usually in connection with one of the other ploys listed here, find a way to side-track the discussion with abrasive or controversial comments in hopes of turning attention to a new, more manageable topic. This works especially well with companions who can "argue" with you over the new topic and polarize the discussion arena in order to avoid discussing more key issues.

18. Emotionalize, Antagonize, and Goad Opponents.
If you can't do anything else, chide and taunt your opponents and draw them into emotional responses which will tend to make them look foolish and overly motivated, and generally render their material somewhat less coherent. Not only will you avoid discussing the issues in the first instance, but even if their emotional response addresses the issue, you can further avoid the issues by then focusing on how "sensitive they are to criticism".

19. Ignore proof presented, demand impossible proofs. This is perhaps a variant of the "play dumb" rule. Regardless of what material may be presented by an opponent in public forums, claim the material irrelevant and demand proof that is impossible for the opponent to come by (it may exist, but not be at his disposal, or it may be something which is known to be safely destroyed or withheld, such as a murder weapon). In order to completely avoid discussing issues may require you to categorically deny and be critical of media or books as valid sources, deny that witnesses are acceptable, or even deny that statements made by government or other authorities have any meaning or relevance.

20. False evidence. Whenever possible, introduce new facts or clues designed and manufactured to conflict with opponent presentations as useful tools to neutralize sensitive issues or impede resolution. This works best when the "crime" was designed with contingencies for the purpose, and the facts cannot be easily separated from the fabrications.

21. Call a Grand Jury, Special Prosecutor, or other empowered investigative body. Subvert the (process) to your benefit and effectively neutralize all sensitive issues without open discussion. Once convened, the evidence and testimony are required to be secret when properly handled. For instance, if you own the prosecuting attorney, it can insure a Grand Jury hears no useful evidence and that the evidence is sealed an unavailable to subsequent investigators. Once a favorable verdict (usually, this technique is applied to find the guilty innocent, but it can also be used to obtain charges when seeking to frame a victim) is achieved, the matter can be considered officially closed.

22. Manufacture a new truth. Create your own expert(s), group(s), author(s), leader(s) or influence existing ones willing to forge new ground via scientific, investigative, or social research or testimony which concludes favorably. In this way, if you must actually address issues, you can do so authoritatively.

23. Create bigger distractions. If the above does not seem to be working to distract from sensitive issues, or to prevent unwanted media coverage of unstoppable events such as trials, create bigger news stories (or treat them as such) to distract the multitudes.

24. Silence critics. If the above methods do not prevail, consider removing opponents from circulation by some definitive solution so that the need to address issues is removed entirely. This can be by their death, arrest and detention, blackmail or destruction of their character by release of blackmail information, or merely by proper intimidation with blackmail or other threats.

25. Vanish. If you are a key holder of secrets or otherwise overly illuminated and you think the heat is getting too hot, to avoid the issues, vacate the kitchen.

It be what it be . . .

Good list, seen it before but good to bring it back to the forefront.

Other tactics, destroy a forum with too many thinkers with spam and spam attacks (hasn't worked here due to admin and the mods) and posting under multiple aliases sometimes complementing each other and other times with manufactured antagonism

It's a forum. It's not a news agency.

It's also a cash cow for admin.

Anyone who stakes an important decision on what they read on a forum deserves to live where they can be closely supervised.

What the hell are you supposedly trying to say with that?

For any of that above list to mean anything, is to assert that there is an active conspiracy on the forum to deceive some party regarding Chile. From who? People wanting to move to Chile? Half the members are either here or have been here. We are not the U.S. government.

By the way, that list is pure bullshit. Welcome to the use of natural language and communication. Anyone that made it past preschool has mastered that list. Hell, my dog engages in half the tricks on that list.

That list is typically what is taught in intro to logic and critical thinking courses under intro to fallacies. Philosophy 102 type crap. If you reading this forum or anything for that matter on the Internet, without applying some critical thinking, you should unplug your Internet connection right now for your own safety. Hell, don't go outside. You might hurt yourself.

Let's try a few out:

First, let's list everything involved in communication or some variation on it (the scope of that list covers behavior in total, not just verbal behavior ).
Then we will define any use of that as proof of intentional disinformation (blameworthiness be dammed).
Thus, there is a disinformation conspiracy going on.

Please? (woops, did it again)

Think I will go walk my dog (dang, I just keep on doing it).

Perhaps there really is a disinformation campaign on the forum (darn, just can not say anything without stepping on that list).

In fact, if you are not talking about everything you know, you are engaged in disinformation according to that.

I would say it is not about moving to Chile (Sí o No), it is about the topics of history (ancient to recent events), economics, science, medicine and social science theory which may have varying degrees of connection to the subject of moving to Chile Sí o No.

Also true that any idiot that uses a forum to bolster their preconceptions and shout down or ridicule alternative points of view deserves the consequences when reality proves their wrong.

Here is the thing. Think about this.

If I shared everything I know, I would not be in business for long and this forum would not exist at all.

Even when a client contracts me, I don't share everything I know. We don't give up contacts at shipping companies, banks, who my other clients are, and so on. That would be absurd. That is information that took years to develop. Now, if someone wants to pay me, I will use that information to solve whatever problem I can for them; but just because someone contracts me does not mean they get our methods or contacts.

As it stands, I am sharing perhaps way more than I should. I know for a fact that 9/10 th of the 'want to be expat relocation' experts in Chile would not be in business if this forum did not exist. They would not even know where to start. Most of them start off when they move to Chile themselves by calling or emailing me, digging for information on this forum, reading the articles on our web sites. None of the guys currently doing relocation existed before us. There is not a single one out there in Chile today, that was in business when we started (in spite of their bs claims on their web sites).

I made a decision when I started this forum that the benefits to us getting the basic questions answered and information out for people to make a decision about Chile, far out strip the potential costs; but, there is a reasonable limit. One for my business to function, and two there are things that new people will hurt themselves by only kind of understanding out of context. There are also things that appear on this forum from time to time that are just wrong (for whatever reason). It is just the nature of this forum, that I have to make judgment calls about what gets clipped, what is really harmful, what is wrong but relatively harmless.

I am not out there to actively deceive people. I have said since the start, we encourage everyone to try moving to Chile or doing what is discussed on this forum on their own. Many do manage to take care of things. Many do, and fail. We found out a long time ago people that try on their own and fail at it, make much better clients because they then appreciate what it is we do for the little bit of money we charge. They however need the basic information to even make a decision to start.

Na, you know I think I will let this stand. It might be educational to some of the pedestrian readers or new members, as to just how unique this forum is in the English realm of the Internet on the topic of Chile. Also, just how trustworthy the information is that is provided here.

As for the cash cow factor, not so certain about that. Last year was the first year I had to ask myself if it was really cost effective to keep it operational.

My legal bill last year including hiring outside council (yes, even we have to hire other law firms for certain specializations) as a direct result of operating this forum was over $10,000 US last year to chase scumballs out of Chile that were using this forum to prey on members and expats.

Add the hundreds of hours to operate and maintain, costs of servers, domains, backup systems, and so on. If I was hiring people to operate this forum, rather than doing it myself, we would easily break through the $30,000 US a year operating costs between technical costs and paying someone to handle the day to day administration (that is, if I went cheap and outsourced to India perhaps). As it is, I do all this stuff myself, because not sure I would trust anyone else to do it. At least not without spending a lot more than $30,000 a year on labor costs.

So, not really going to spend that kind of time and money to deceive people or let people be deceived (thus, the $10,000 legal bill), especially if they follow the advice on this forum they would find out really soon just how right or wrong it was. That is apart from all the disclaimers and warnings provided when members sign up.

Besides, if the information on this web site was overwhelmingly deceptive, do you not think that after 5 years that it might become fairly well known for being a place on the Internet that expats are deceived?

I have spent a lot of time and money to insure that does not happen, and I have outright rejected many proposals over the years for advertising and "joint" projects with other organizations specifically because I could not insure the quality of information flow.

It is not like we started this forum yesterday. Most of the information provided here has been tested by possibly hundreds if not thousands of people, and when it is wrong it tends to be fairly self correcting fairly quickly. Some things on this forum might be true 4 years ago, and not now. Someone comes back and says, "hay everyone, x, y, and z does not work anymore" or "x now works".

Meanwhile, I would say only about 30% of my clients really come to us via this forum in some form. Really, most of our income comes from traditional legal work as my wife is an expert in international law. It comes from referrals from law firms both in Chile and around the World, or people coming through our other sites needing things like inheritance assistance, divorces, corporations, and so on that are normally not related to moving to Chile type clients or clients that would need to read this forum for information. Most my clients are surprised to find out this forum exists. Often they hire us, then I refer them to the forum to get general questions answered that I don't have time to answer or can not remember to tell them.

In spite of that, I keep it operational more as a labor of love. Not because we need it to survive. We would likely get by just fine without it.

My bigger concern, that I have no answer for at this point, is what to do with it either when we decide to quit or retire. Do we just pull the plug, sell it, donate it to science, give it away? What happens to it if I get hit by a bus?

Still got some time to come up with a solution to those problems hopefully.

Dear g~j:

Thank you very much for raising your concerns, as you did, in your original post. My answer to the survey is quite simple. I have selected the option number one, namely: "Absolutely none. Allchileans are always paragons of polite virtue."

If this is not true -- then this very post of mine constitutes disinformation. Otherwise, this is the original poster who is engaged in disinformation. One way or another. This is true. Or, this is but a disinformation campaign, that is running in this very topic.

Kind Regards,

Gato

I have to say that Charles is more than generous in the amount of info that he shares both in the forum and on his website. Even if it were a cash cow, admin has been always more than open as to why he shells out his own hard earned money to keep it going.

As to the premise that people misinform on purpose? Not so sure about that. One must understand that everyone's experiences in Chile will be different. Their political background/interpretation of Chilean politics/culture are shaped by their background.

I have disagreed vehemently with some on topics but it has never crossed my mind that people (regulars as opposed to fly by nighters) had an agenda to misinform. Just my two cents.

The ones that get tricky are the topics that bring out the conspiracy theorists but even on those I believe that the people making certain statements truly believe them to be true.

I would certainly say that in debates that arise I have seen people present their case and omit facts that bolstered the opposing view. But any great lawyer or debater would do the same.

Hmmmmm.

Original post strikes me as a proxy for "disagrees with G/J or some of their sources".

PDC post strikes me as pretty accurate. Lots of passionate feeling on XYZ issue, with people honestly saying what they think "is so", right or wrong. Intentional disinformation? I do not think so. Just people saying what they think, with all the subjectivity, bias, emotion and self-reinforcing information that implies. Add no small amount of conspiracy theory, bin Laden back & forth being a pretty good example of that.

I could do without the flames, slams & X-Files, but such behavior is also unfortunately part & parcel of controversial subjects....especially with the sorts of minds that must substitute invective & insinuation for fact & argument, regardless of which "side" such minds take on various issues.

If I were admin, I'd segregate political back & forth and flame-fests from truly Chile-centric discussions (e.g. - recent posts only show relevant posts, "other" posts require those interested in them to go straight to Lobby, etc). But that's me. I am not in Admin's shoes, do not know his priorities, resources, time, etc. He does things his way, and we benefit by having the forum, whatever the imperfections of its members.
