Where to find prosciutto and jamon serrano in Santiago?

Postby isolde100 » Mon May 16, 2011 9:43 pm

Went to the central market today expecting it to look like the Boqueria and other markets in Barcelona. Alas, I did not see luscious legs of jamon serrano or prosciutto di parma hanging in the stalls. I went to Coquinaria at the W Hotel and was not impressed either with their selection of charcuterie.

Where do you get jamon serrano, jamon iberico, prosciutto di parma, and other European cured hams in Santiago? Any good places in Vitacura? Do the Chileans have similar versions of these cured meats?

Esme
(just arrived as you can tell from my questions and the surprise at the La Vega market)

Most supermarkets do Serrano ham but don't hold your breath for Parma ham

Plan to spend your child's inheritance for any sort of high-quality jamón serrano, if prices here are any indicator.

A leg of serrano ham can be found at Jumbo for a price of around 60,000 CLP.

A decent leg of Spanish acorn-fed jamón serrano down here, even in the Zona Franca, is usually over 100.000 CLP. And the good stuff is over 150.000

I used to live in Catalunya. I know exactly what you mean. There is nothing like it in Chile. esnif esnif....

If your travels to Spain make you familar with the Baix Llobregat, I used to live in Platja de Castelldefels, on Passeig Maritim. Of course that was back in Franco's day and we had to call those places by their "christian" (castellano) names, and not the catalan.

Px,

Not too familiar with the area other than as a transit point to Sitges.

Price for serrano ham normally varies directly with the duration of curing. Down here in my local Jumbo, they only carry the ham cured in 9 months. Around Christmas time, they also have the ham cured in 18 months for the price mentioned above.

Proscuitto is always available, I even order it online with my Jumbo order. I have stopped buying Serano as I prefer Proscuitto. Jumbo (La Dehesa) and Unimarc (Santa Maria) stock it. They have to types Parma and Delicia and the packets look exactly the same. The Parma is dryer and the Delicia is softer and thinner.
