I love the markets in Barcelona, especially the Boqueria but also the smaller ones like Santa Caterina market. I went to the Mercado Central and La Vega for the first time yesterday expecting them to look like the Boqueria and expecting of course to find jamon iberico, jamon serrano, a variety of cheeses and amazing fruits and vegetables. I came away disappointed. The fruit and veg were OK but nothing like you get in Barcelona and the cheeses were disappointing. I need to change my expectations.

Santiago is not Barcelona(which is my favourite city in Europe), you may have noticed. Around Christmas whole Serrano hams are available all over the place, stock up they hold well. Costs around $100USD each which to me in Canada seems cheap. Never bought one in Spain so I don’t know the cost there. The comment above about goat cheese and other soft cheeses is point on.

Alas, I did not see luscious legs of jamon serrano or prosciutto di parma hanging in the stalls. I went to Coquinaria at the W Hotel and was not impressed either with their selection of charcuterie.

Where do you get jamon serrano, jamon iberico, prosciutto di parma, and other European cured hams in Santiago? Any good places in Vitacura? Do the Chileans have similar versions of these cured meats?

Esme
(just arrived as you can tell from my questions and the surprise at the La Vega market)

Have you been to Jumbo? They sell pato negro, proscuitto delizia, proscuitto di parma, jamon serrano, iberico (from Spain and locally made versions of it), wild boar & Wagyu jamon from southern chile, whole hams, sliced hams, french charcuterie (saucisson etc), German sausages... I really can´t think of any thing missing in terms of cold cuts here.

In Vitacura, you can find most of that in Unimarc, but if you travel a little outside of Vitacura to La Dehesa, you will find Jumbo has pretty much everything you are looking for and more.
