It is far more sinister than I thought so thank you for clarifying. I have a strong "sixth sense" and I know that sometimes my computer is accessed from the outside. Then I just quickly close it. This started last year, after I joined FB - but only now do I see the connection.
Sometimes the cursor moves on the screen by itself, I get programs in the recently used ones that I have not used, and the computer is whirring like crazy - I terminate the ADSL connection and close the computer again, as quickly as I can.
Internet is a nasty place.
I'm happy you found out the truth about FB so quickly.

BTW your FB account is deactivated, as you said. It's not actually gone. It can never be deleted. Ever.

This would be the reason they are trying to implement this law to protect cloud computing and other digital info, because there is no protection at all right now in the United States. There is no privacy on the internet, especially in the United States. Assume any data you put on the internet, belongs to the government and is freely accessible to anyone (e.g. local law enforcement, nsa, cia, irs, NRA, fish and game department, creditors, advertisers, spammers, essentially anyone ).

Essentially, if you use any computer anywhere in the United States, that you do not own (that is subject to interpretation also), the government (that is fairly broad definition also to mean "contractors") can access it without a warrant.
