Are you ready for riots, high costs, poor services, high costs, the world's worst spoken Spanish, high costs, the endemic desire of nearly every chileno to cheat and deceive every foreigner, inescapable petty thievery, marginal restaurant eating, recalcitrant banks, abysmal automobile drivers, a superstitious and undereducated proletariat (and sizable lumpen-proletariat), shoddy craftsmanship, legions of loose dogs, excessive noise, limited selection, high degrees of public alcoholism, and high costs of living?

Then welcome to Chile. And welcome to the foro.
Here....have a grape!

Gloria, you're wonderful.

This is the new national hymn in Chile. You can easily hum along.

Book review abstract:

"Alcoholism and alcohol related problems are endemic in Chile, and it has been said that they are the most important Public Health problem."

And another paper: (Alcoholism as a political problem in Chile, by Weinstein

Abstract

Chile has a very serious alcohol problem. 20% of the population over 15 years of age are problem drinkers, - 15% are excessive drinkers, and 5% are alcoholics.

You will soon see all of this, in colour.

Do they vomit on the streets every single night? I hope so! I sure miss vomiting Koreans.

I have had several brief some assignments in Daegu and Seoul over the past ten years. Never saw anything in Korea quite like the drunks in Chile. Although I must say that many parts of Korean cities do smell like vomit, though I think it was actually the kimchee in the vomit that accentuates the effect.

Haha. You have no idea how many people I saw each night vomiting on the streets in Korea. It was amazing, and very annoying once I adopted a puppy who tried to eat IT on walks (good times). Kimchi has a very strong smell, but not quite like vomit. But you and I both know that. How was Daegu? I had some friends who taught there, and I thought about some university positions there, but Seoul is the city for me. My recruiter tried to convince me to go to Busan, but I thought that would have been a mistake. I'm glad I chose Seoul over Busan.

Reminds me of a typical evening in Isla Vista when my daughter was going to school at UC Santa Barbara.

Totally off topic but I..... rather preferred Daegu over Seoul area. For one thing, it was out of artillery range from nK! Seoul had a humid cold rotten smell in many places esp in the winter and that is why I mentioned the combined stench of vomit and kimchee (I still spell it that way, sorry).... imagine them both together and that was parts of Seoul. That is one decent thing about Chile - not many places smell as bad as those parts of Seoul.

Spring comes sooner in the Daegu area, it's greener and sooner. Definitely a smaller city feel to it.

Oh, yeah, I know the way Seoul smells, and you described it well. I liked the fact that Seoul was big. If I were to move back, I'd want to be right there again. It doesn't smell nearly as bad as cities in Russia. St. Pete is hideous.
