We have a word for that. It's called "mercenaries." The practice is as old as Rome.

They are only in Libya to Be All That They Can Be, and after that they will get a Libyan carnet and a scholarship to a 4-year institution of higher learning. No, really. I saw it on NPR.

But, as far as I knew that had never been done in USA, this was a pilot program that started a couple of years ago, not sure it is still going on, but they were targeting people related to healthcare. Particularly nurses, if you joint as a nurse you become directly an officer. So you go from being a student to be an officer in the US army :s

The US Armed Forces always has been recruiting legal aliens and US citizens. However, only American Citizens (born or naturalized) can be officers. In the case of mercenaries, well mercenaries go were the money is, and believe me, if you are looking for money; don't join the US military. There are real and better mercenaries organizations for that.

well that was new about that program, that other legal aliens than green card holders were the target (mainly recent graduates who were on an F1 visa for example, but others too, just NOT green card holders), and a dear Chinese friend of mine, joined the army as a nurse last year, and 3 months later she was a commissioned officer (and USA citizen of course)
