Since you were not aware of some of the other information sources available to Chileans, apart from those controlled by the tyrannical fist of press censure in the country, I've found a few online alternatives to assist in gaining a broader perspective on the news surrounding events in Chile.

Here is the old mainstream standby, Anarcho Punk News. http://anarcopunknoticias.blogspot.com/ ... -bbva.html They are very proud of their neo-Luddite campaigns and should serve as a model to all forward-thinking youth within the nation as well as addressing the adolescent fancies and proclivities of nonresident observers.

"Chaos on the Net" (kaos en la red) Another fine news reporting agency, with a special section on conflict in Chile. http://www.kaosenlared.net/chile

And then there is the old standby of objective reporting, and it matters not that these fellows seem to be periodically indicted as eco-terrorists: the Greenpeace legions. Their intent seems to be a halt to nearly all viable industrial, mining, energy, agricultural, and fishing activities in Chile, but that would leave the world-famous Chilean sand-candle and organically grown incense exports to keep the nation afloat. http://www.greenpeace.org/chile/es/

Meanwhile, the mob violence in Santiago and other cities continues.

Where I study in Temuco, normally they are among the first ones in picking up whatever topic of the year, to start the riots.
Luckily they haven't done it, and I haven't seen anything of a big deal here, besides some riots near UC Temuco.

there you go.... Always picking the total extreme to try and make your case. You should read "Concentración Económica de los Medios de Comunicación en Chile". Very good.

And yes; I do realize there are online sources for news. Thanks for the enlightening tip. I also realize that a large percentage of the population does not have access to same. If one looks at TV where most Chileans get news on a nightly basis the same concentration of the medium is evident.

Actually almost every chilean does have that access - and free. -- even nonresident foreigners can go to the local library and get free internet access. Even the remote work camps in the outback of Tierra del Fuego have satellite-based internet. That means that almost anyone in Chile can have free access to any news source that they might wish to use.

You really should visit Chile sometime.

Ok.... Ok..... I give up...... Almost every Chilean in CHile has access if they are willing to spend money and commuting time each and every day to go to a library to get their daily news.

You can be Sugar Ray and I will be Roberto Duran.

You used that metaphor previously. We need something more imaginative, and chilean.

Since we are coming up on the 21 de mayo, and the celebration of the Battle of Iquique, you can be Pratt, and I will play Condell.

Something like 50% of Chilean homes have internet and 68% have computers, so with offices and schools added in the majority of Chilean have access to internet news.

Another interesting observation by the Nielson folks: just about 50 percent of CL homes have cable, which means that those homes are probably not restricted to the jackboot fascist mind-controlling media ministry single-channel that holds the noses of each and every chilean to the approved party line news pablum.

The tightly controlled press in Chile last year also came out with a story "Chile es el país latinoamericano con mayor penetración de Internet."

I guess old Allendista penquista won't be happy until we have a print version of Pravda at the kioskos.

LOL
I know what the penetration rates are......
I watch a lot of the CHilean channels through direct tv, internet, and jumptv..... Not much variety of viewpoints there.... But like I said I give up..... Besides I agreed with the most important part..... These rock throwing hooligans are bad.

Excellent articles. One of the better ones that I have read in English. The arguments made in the first article will, I'm sure, fall on deaf ears.
