Apparently five students and three carabineros injured; 18 rioters arrested. Of course in Chile the students riot for any number of reasons.... when there are reforms, when there are no reforms, when there are increases in fees, new industry in the neighbourhood, new industry in other neighbourhoods, industry that pays for their education, when it's too cold, when it's too warm, when the paint doesn't dry fast enough.....

Government has mobilised nearly all available special operations carabineros units.

Why has no one done a decent report on the riots around Santiago in past days? Something like 100 "students" arrested.Rocks, bottles,tear gas launched. Rioters reported using sticks, baseball bats, even one report of a boleadora. Cars damaged. Part of Metro closed (Los Héroes station closed yesterday for a while due to riots). And so on. Might be helpful to those working here or planning to visit.

Oh, yes, and...

Welcome to Chile, and foolishness. This is the Chile that the guidebooks and travel lit seem to ignore.

Reuters, yesterday: Chile copper output could take hit from protests

Meanwhile, rioting in other Chilean cities. 63 reported arrested in Coyhaique where rioters taking over public buildings. Five seriously injured in riots in Concepción. Foto below shows one rioter in Concepción after being hit in the face with a tear-gas projectile. Foto UPI. Unsurprising that the rioter was a sociology student.

From what I understand there are two different protest, by the same group of people (university students), happening at the same time. One is over higher education policies, and the other over Aysen.
