How is my monthly budget for living in Santiago?

Postby brian.usa » Mon May 09, 2011 5:21 pm

Hi Everyone!

I'm beginning the planning phases of my my 6 month (mas o menos) trip to Chile which will occur at the end of this year. I'd like to wire and/or take sufficient money with me for 6 months (in the case that I don't do some of the business deals that I'm planning on doing. I've estimated that it will be roughly $1,200 USD or $575.000 CLP per month to live in a basic furnished apartment, pay utility bills, have a cell phone, cable/internet in my apartment, car insurance and have money for groceries/food. I'm a single guy and will be living with my cousin (so the apartment rent is cut in half basically -- I'm estimating it will be around $350.000 to $450.000 CLP at most for a 2 bedroom furnished apartment)

So here's the estimated budget in CLP:

[Re-Edited!]
$65.000 - Utilities (Gas, Water and Electricity)
$30.000 - Cell Phone Service (3G, Text, 1,000 mins.)
$30.000 - Home Cable and Broadband Internet
$40.000 - Car Insurance
$75.000 - Food/Groceries
$100.000 - Extra Expenses/Gas
$250.00 - Apartment Monthly Rent

Am I low-balling on anything or are these decent figures? Objections? I'm crazy? :)

Thank You!!

$75.000 - Extra Expenses/Gas/"Asados"/Carrete

car insurance could be closer to 35,000
75,000 is two tanks of gas, or 30 beers at the Pub or 180 beers at the supermarket
You have medical insurance there?????

Road Trip Money!!!, dont forget all the roads are toll roads, a trip to valpo will cost between 10.000 - 20.000 in tolls, and then snacks, lots of snacks to buy a the toll plazas
Plan N....... Back On track

Excuse the "Asados"/"Carrete" addition - I hit submit before I deleted them off! haha

I agree with you, I believe that the gas/extra expenses should be put at $100.000 pesos the very least.

No, I do not have medical insurance, nor am I sure how the system works in Chile. How much would I be looking at paying monthly, roughly?

Thanks!

You need some sort of medical cover! could be a travel insurance policy, or you could buy one locally, someone else might have some tips here....

That is 35.000 a year for SOAP, the minimum mandatory. But that is not a monthly expense, it's 35.000 a year.

If we had BCI down here I would consider using them.
