Postby Italianicius » Wed Apr 20, 2011 2:21 pm

How much does it cost to petrol there? Is it by litre or gallon like in the US?

Best sites to buy used cars?

Thanks

Petrol is sold in litres and cost about 700 pesos per litre.

www.chileautos.cl would be the best place to search for used vehicles.

www.xe.com to convert your currency to CHP.

Depends on the fuel grade and where you are in the country. In the far south you may pay over 800 pesos per litre for the cheapest grade. In Tierra del Fuego you don't pay for a fill-up in pesos but in "un ojo de la cara."

BTW gasoline is called bencina in this country. In Argentina it is called nafta. In Natales it is called expensive.

In Chile diesel is called petroleo which sounds too much like petrol. And a diesel engine or diesel powered vehicle is called a petrolera, which has resulted in some mishaps when station attendants ask if the vehicle is a "petrolera" and the visitor thinks, well, petrolera sounds like petrol, so sure, put some of that petroleo in this tank. Station attendants are not always clever enough to read the vehicle labeling which should indicate whether the vehicle uses gasoline or diesel.

Although converting to CLP will get you Chilean pesos instead.

Converting to CHP will get you the Swiss Peso, which is not much used anymore.
